Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

Eat Mindfully

I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

I noticed a paid more attention to what I was eating, so this caused me to only eat as much as my body wanted, not overeating and making my stomach hurt.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/09/2025 9:45 AM
I use a lot of plastic bags at my job, and then straws at restaurants. Some subs for these could be using no straws at all, and a sub for plastic bags is buying reusable ones that are not made of plastic.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
Who is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:18 AM
I would say low income families are most affected because they cannot afford the best housing, or places to live so their environment may not be as clean or healthy. This can lead to sickness, or disease that can negatively affect the person.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Switching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

    Jakson Keffer (102)'s avatar
    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:15 AM
I can start by trying to drive less, carpool with people, and look into electric cars.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:13 AM
We usually drive our cars everywhere as we live in a more rural area, so there isn't a lot of places to walk to other than on my college campus. I believe that with this in mind, my attitude for transportation may be higher and it may be more important to me than to others.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
Your utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?

    Jakson Keffer (102)'s avatar
    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:09 AM
Our energy usage is in the mid-range as my parents do a good job with the heating and cooling and keeping it at a good temperature, but we need o improve on unplugging things from the outlets and turning lights off when we are done in that room.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

    Jakson Keffer (102)'s avatar
    Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:04 AM
You definitely can, there's no reason organic production cannot be increased. It is more costly than other foods, so that may be the only way I could agree with the statement above.
