Jakson's actions
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 45 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 3 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/09/2025 9:48 AMI noticed a paid more attention to what I was eating, so this caused me to only eat as much as my body wanted, not overeating and making my stomach hurt. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/09/2025 9:45 AMI use a lot of plastic bags at my job, and then straws at restaurants. Some subs for these could be using no straws at all, and a sub for plastic bags is buying reusable ones that are not made of plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:18 AMI would say low income families are most affected because they cannot afford the best housing, or places to live so their environment may not be as clean or healthy. This can lead to sickness, or disease that can negatively affect the person. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergySwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:15 AMI can start by trying to drive less, carpool with people, and look into electric cars. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:13 AMWe usually drive our cars everywhere as we live in a more rural area, so there isn't a lot of places to walk to other than on my college campus. I believe that with this in mind, my attitude for transportation may be higher and it may be more important to me than to others. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:09 AMOur energy usage is in the mid-range as my parents do a good job with the heating and cooling and keeping it at a good temperature, but we need o improve on unplugging things from the outlets and turning lights off when we are done in that room. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Jakson Keffer (102) 4/08/2025 8:04 AMYou definitely can, there's no reason organic production cannot be increased. It is more costly than other foods, so that may be the only way I could agree with the statement above.
