Adding fruits and vegetables to our meals nourishes our body and the planet. I will prepare and enjoy 2 servings of a variety of colorful fruits and veggies.

COMPLETED 17
DAILY ACTIONS

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join a local or campus-based outdoor restoration project to help care for natural spaces and get involved in hands-on environmental work.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Understand My Water Footprint

Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Turn Off Lights and Electronics

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Feedback Survey

Take the Campus Ecochallenge Feedback Survey

Tell us what you thought! Take a short survey about your experience to help us improve future events. It only takes a few minutes — and when you complete the survey, you'll earn points!

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Enjoy a Meatless Meal

Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Try a New Way to Prepare Food

I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Practice Zero-Waste Cooking

Food waste hurts our planet and our communities. I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.

COMPLETED 7
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Learn About and Practice Sustainable Fashion

I will spend 30 minutes learning about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 2 containers out of the landfill each day.

COMPLETED 8
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station

Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Research Local Waste and Landfill Sites

I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

It is easy to make small changes to water consumption, such as taking shorter showers, turning off the water when brushing your teeth, doing laundry less frequently, and using the dishwasher!

I agree with you, making sure you turn off the water while your brushing your teeth can make a big change within the water.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 11/09/2025 1:13 PM
Power in my area is generated mostly through natural gas and nuclear. This is very interesting to me as I had no clue we used so much nuclear.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet? What fruits or vegetables did you try this week, and which was your favorite?

Eating mostly fruit/veggie-based meals feels lighter than eating meat-centric meals. I love mangoes and zucchini the most!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

We often consume at rates consistent with having infinite resources and infinite space to discard with no repercussions, when the truth is that we live on a planet with finite resources, and the planet suffers as a result of our consumption. Balance is important so that we can restore the planet, and use resources without depleting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 11/06/2025 9:02 AM
I try my best to not use single-use products in general already, but paper towels and sandwich bags are the ones that i use most often. I have tried to be more conscious of using alternatives such as reusable glass containers and hand towels instead, and it has been effective, and will save me money in the long run.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
How was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 11/02/2025 11:47 AM
Trying to eat less meat has made me branch out and be a bit more adventurous and intentional with my meal planning.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 10/31/2025 1:40 PM
Learning to sew is a great way to make clothes your own or revamp clothes that you've grown sick of!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What surprised you most during your visit? How could your campus or community reduce its overall waste?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 10/31/2025 1:39 PM
I was utterly shocked at the sheer volume of trash that comes in every day (3.1 million pounds!). Standing next to the 4-story-high pile of trash was sickening. We can reduce waste by using less single-use products and buying greener options.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

    Julianna Krastel 315's avatar
    Julianna Krastel 315 10/31/2025 1:37 PM
Our local landfills tend to be located in low-income communities. The landfills have pretty bad records and are responsible for an extreme amount of water and air pollution nearby. Surrounding communities suffer from unswimmable water to air quality issues.

Eating more meatless meals has really made me think more about ways to be creative when I cook! I also notice that meals are feeling less heavy, but not less fulfilling.
