Waste

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

COMPLETED 3

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I bought a grow tent specifically for the purpose of being able to grow my tomatoes and strawberries despite the cold weather we recently finally got out of. I think that worked pretty well for my lifestyle as I still get to have a garden even when it gets cold out.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

I regularly get the Starbucks drinks from the humanities building, and they always come in plastic cups. Instead of getting a new cup every time, I could buy a use a reusable cup.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

I would say that if we actively worked to make it possible, it absolutely would be. The only reason organic food can’t feed the population is due to our reliance on inorganic foods and if we used the energy we put into those into organic food, we wouldn’t face that problem.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Have you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.

I just remember being a little kid sitting in the long grass of my front lawn listening to the sounds around me of the birds singing and the squirrels rustling through the trees, when a small rabbit hopped through the branches and started eating the grass. I felt so still, just watching it and seeing what it was doing. I think it was the first time I realized that all the animals out there were just like me in their own way, because after he saw me he just sat there still watching me and seeing what I was doing.
