Food
Plan Meals for the Week
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 2 friends and classmates each day about what I learn. I will also share what I learn on the Ecochallenge feed.
Simplicity
Track My Purchases and Spending Habits
I will spend 10 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 20 minutes per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Feedback Survey
Take the Campus Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
Tell us what you thought! Take a short survey about your experience to help us improve future events. It only takes a few minutes — and when you complete the survey, you'll earn points!
Waste
Use Reusable Bags when Shopping
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 4 disposable plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Energy
Switch To Cold Water for Laundry
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Simplicity
Think About My Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Transportation
Share Rides with Others
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or coordinate ride shares with roommates, classmates, or campus peers to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/22/2025 8:44 AMI plan to buy groceries with the money I save and maybe do get a sweet treat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If you live on campus or in shared housing, you may not receive a utility bill—so what are some other ways you can reduce energy use in your living space?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/22/2025 8:42 AMSince I live in an off-campus house, I can take simple steps each day to reduce my electricity usage. I can turn off lights and electronics when I’m not using them, unplug chargers, and use energy-efficient LED bulbs. I can also rely on natural sunlight during the day instead of turning on lights, use fans instead of air conditioning when it’s not too hot, and wash clothes in cold water. Small habits like these can lower my energy bill and help reduce my overall environmental impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/22/2025 8:42 AMYou could use the power of the sun by installing solar panels or using solar-powered lights, chargers, and fans. These options help save electricity and reduce your overall environmental footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/22/2025 8:41 AMYou can save energy and reduce your environmental footprint by turning off lights, unplugging devices, and using reusable items like water bottles and bags. Small changes like washing clothes in cold water, recycling, and walking or biking instead of driving can make a big difference over time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/20/2025 8:24 AMEvery time I go to practice, me and my roommates will ride together in one car to make trips a lot easier. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/20/2025 8:05 AMSome barriers to using reusable bottles instead of bottled water include convenience, forgetfulness, and concerns about tap water quality or taste. It’s often easier to grab a bottled water when in a hurry or if refill stations aren’t available. To make using a reusable bottle a lasting habit, you can keep one with you at all times, refill it before leaving home, and choose a bottle you enjoy using so it becomes part of your daily routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/20/2025 8:04 AMUsually when I go shopping, I forgot to bring a reusable bag in which I then have to bring everything out to my car in my hands. I always try to remember to bring a bag in but sometimes I forget. In New Jersey, they aren't giving out free bags anymore so when you need a bag or forget one in your car, you have to always carry the stuff in your hands or use the cart.-
Kurtis Miller 10/21/2025 12:09 AMI often just bring it out with my hands if it's a small enough bulk. Otherwise I will ask for a paper bag if they're available. But really, it's the plastic company that should be regulated on these things.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/17/2025 2:48 PMI do agree with this statement because I think being outside helps you relax and enjoy being away from everything and just breathing in the fresh air. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/17/2025 2:43 PMExercising impacts my physical well being by making sure I am staying active everyday. I am going through acl rehab right now so I go to pt 3 times a week and I exercise for 45 minutes each time. I enjoy running because it’s very relaxing and I can go at any pace I want to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
alyssa lienhard 902 10/17/2025 7:24 AMI have noticed that when I am at college I spend less money on purchases and focus more on having enough money to buy groceries. Honestly, halloween costumes definitely made me spend a little more then wanted but I know after this I won't spend my money as fast.
