Dina's actions
Food
Practice Zero-Waste Cooking
Food waste hurts our planet and our communities. I will cook 1 meals with zero waste each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Community
Explore the Community Feed and Connect with Others
I will spend 10 minutes reading the Ecochallenge feed each day and giving high fives or commenting on posts by people who I don't know, but whose content inspires or interests me.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minutes per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Simplicity
Reflect on My Needs Versus Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.
Feedback Survey
Take the Campus Ecochallenge Feedback Survey
Tell us what you thought! Take a short survey about your experience to help us improve future events. It only takes a few minutes — and when you complete the survey, you'll earn points!
Waste
Visit a Local Recycling Center, Landfill, or Transfer Station
Seeing where waste goes can change how we think about what we throw away. I will visit a local facility to learn more about the waste stream in my community and share what I learn with others and in the feed.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.
Simplicity
Organize a Course on Simple Living
I will organize Ecochallenge.org’s discussion course A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World with classmates, friends, or peers to explore how we can live more intentionally.
Health
Audit Toxic Products In My Living Space
Many common products contain harmful chemicals. I will spend 60 minutes researching chemicals found in products I use, and I will make a list of products I'd like to replace with safer options.
Waste
Complete a Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill. I will share a photo and reflection of this action on the feed.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Environmental issues often impact marginalized communities the most. I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Transportation
Choose A Carbon Offset When Flying
Flying emits a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere, which affects air quality and the health of our planet, animals, and people. If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Community
Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
I will spend 120 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Nature
Organize a Course on Reconnecting with Earth
I will organize one of Ecochallenge.org's discussion courses, such as 'Reconnecting with Earth', with my family, friends, coworkers, or classmates.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Dina Lomagno 7/16/2026 1:52 PMIt's been very difficult here with the summer temps reaching 110 so my husband and I have committed every day to start walking at 8pm somewhat of a wind down tradition for us, it's been going really well! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Dina Lomagno 7/15/2026 10:15 AMBeing summer in Las Vegas I normally would not spend extensive time outside but this challenge actually has gotten me out of my comfort zone to change my schedule to nighttime walking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?
Dina Lomagno 7/15/2026 10:14 AMHaving my own garden has definitely assisted in this, I'm able to utilize all part of the product and whatever I do not use goes back into the compost to assist with amending my soil as I turnover crops.-
Rikki Landry 7/15/2026 5:49 PMComposting is definitely a great way to use al the whole plant, it goes full circle!
I've started a pile in my freezer for stock. When I buy rotisserie chickens, i will take the bones and toss all of my veggie scraps in for a few hours and have wonderful stock!

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage? If you live on campus or in shared housing, you may not receive a utility bill—so what are some other ways you can reduce energy use in your living space?
Dina Lomagno 7/09/2026 5:27 PMOur solar panels have definitely given us a larger reduction and even credits for our electricity bill. We’ve learned from our a/c person to not fluctuate our a/c during the hot summers here in Vegas. He stated that it’s harder on your system to change up and down and takes more energy than just leaving a consistent temperature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWho inspired you on the feed, and why? Did you meet anyone new, learn anything exciting, or discover a new perspective?
Dina Lomagno 7/09/2026 5:25 PMI’ve been learning quite a bit from others and I’ve been taking some additional actions above what I’ve selected that have really given me more impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Dina Lomagno 7/07/2026 1:35 PMIt's funny, I typically will shut off lights when I leave a room but I have not been as attentive to hallways and the kitchen. I actually found myself going back upstairs yesterday to turn the hallway light off. We have changed all of our interior ceiling lighting to low wattage LED can plug ins but every little bit matters! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Dina Lomagno 7/07/2026 1:33 PMI have been really bad about this one, which is why I chose it for one of my actions. I'm always checking my computer off hours but by shutting down, not only am I saving electricity but I am learning how to disconnect to be more present with my family. -
Dina Lomagno 7/02/2026 1:19 PMLast night we kicked off July with Sounds of Summerlin concert series here in Las Vegas. I charged everyone with bringing reusable cups/silverware/containers, home grown and made items and shared blankets and chairs with each other for those that did not have. I took the remainder of food home to add to my compost as well. It was a great time and we had fun with the sustainability challenge!
