Jesse Anderson 7/18/2026 3:40 PMBrief digital cleanses are always nice. Sadly, we live in a world where we are pretty much connected to the internet at all times. When you get opportunities to walk outside, it would also be a great time to leave your phone at home in order to enjoy nature to the fullest extent - I do this and I always feel so much better about my time outside when I don't have my phone with me.

Liana's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 3 disposable cups to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Energy
Turn Off Lights and Electronics
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Food
Plan Meals for the Week
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Water
Understand My Water Footprint
Each of us has a water footprint, directly linked to our daily activities as well as the water required in the production of things we use each day. Understanding our water use is important for a healthy planet. I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste, then share what I learned on the feed.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, classmate, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 2 conversations.
Transportation
Share Rides with Others
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or coordinate ride shares with roommates, classmates, or campus peers to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Nature
Go For A Daily Walk in Nature
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day around my campus, neighborhood, or local green space to connect with nature.
Simplicity
Declutter My Living Space
I will declutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my dorm room, apartment, or home to create a more peaceful and organized living space.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Liana Lounsbury 7/18/2026 11:17 AMI don't have a lot of free time currently so this can be a hindrance for me to spend time outside. However, I want to start taking walks around the block at least once a day again. Especially with the weather being as nice as it is. I only had a chance to walk outside twice this week. However, I took time to put my phone away and really appreciate being outside and to feel the breeze on me and stuff. I hope to start doing this at least 3-4 times a week. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Liana Lounsbury 7/18/2026 11:15 AMSo this week I cleaned out my room of clothes that I do not wear and just other stuff that is basically creating clutter. I want to donate everything. I would like to see if anyone could use the clothes first before I donate any of them. So I will ask around to a couple people that I know. This way if someone needs something or wants something they can just have it! I may do that with the other larger items as well. I would rather just give something to people so they don't have to pay for it.
I always enjoy doing a "spring cleaning" or "decluttering". Not only does it make my space feel more open. I can also pass gentley used items to someone else so they can use and enjoy it!-
Arianna Daniel 7/19/2026 9:52 AMIm with you, I love doing a spring cleaning. Well most of the time, because I feel like I get into it and then it becomes a bigger thing and then I have to finish what I started lol

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Liana Lounsbury 7/12/2026 2:06 PMWhat I have been doing the last week is planning with a friend to drive both of us to the places we need to go. We planned it out where we would go to every place we needed to while going between my home and theirs. This not only saved time but it was also saved gas. I may start doing this more often. Plus it is nice to have company when driving around doing errands!-

Jesse Anderson 7/12/2026 2:19 PMVery eco-friendly and efficient. I wish I had more people nearby who have similar daily routines as me so I could coordinate with them to start more sustainable transportation habits.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversations benefit from active listening?
Liana Lounsbury 7/11/2026 10:23 AMSo I have engaged with at least two people where I did not agree with their perspective or point of view over the last week. We have had a difficult week regarding finances and family matters. To say the least, I have had to have multiple hard conversations and it is safe to say that the people who I spoke with did not agree with me several times during the conversation. So I am proud of myself for how I handled it. In the past, I have shut down and had difficulty communicating in situations like this. However, I engaged in active listening and I heard their perspective. I then spoke up about how I felt. I used facts, and I tried to stay objective. Not letting the conversation turn into basically bickering and badmouthing one another.
Unfortunately I cant go into details because both of the conversations were about highly personal information. I can say that we did reach an understanding both times. I wouldn't say an agreement was reached because several of the things that we were discussing have not been fully resolved. However, I feel like solutions were reached that will make the situations more fair in the future and that is better than nothing.
For my image this week, I decided to share a few ways one can engage in active listening:

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where else would you rather invest this money instead of wasting food?
Liana Lounsbury 7/04/2026 9:50 AMFor the challenge this week I decided to plan our family meals so that I could cut down on food waste. It can be hard because we simply do not eat that much. I also do not know if my family members will eat the leftovers that I make. I try to eat them but I am one person and can only consume so much. I have started simply buying less of the ingredients as a result and making smaller meals. This helps a lot but we do still have some food waste unfortunately. Listed below are the meals I made Monday - Thursday and the ingredients I boght at the store that we didn't already have in the pantry to make them.

Amy Minato 7/06/2026 8:43 PMi found it helpful to freeze leftovers..they are a nice surprise down the road when i don't have time to cook

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?
Liana Lounsbury 7/04/2026 9:25 AMSo I calculated my personal water footprint at about 1,512 gallons of water per day. Per day! That is so much more than I thought it would be. So on that note, I would like to include a few ideas that I would like to try implementing:- Doing laundry less often - This would include waiting until I have loads of lights, darks, towels to actually fill the washer so I don't waste water washing just a few items. I have reduced my laundry to about 3 loads per week. I just can's wash my lights and darks together.
- The website I used recommended putting a bucket in the shower to collect extra water to water my plants with. Did this. It is a great idea!
- Turning off the shower when I shave. I fill the base of the tub with water and use that to rinse my razor. I do not have a traditional bathtub but the tub is deep enough for a foot or so of water which is plenty!
Here is the website I used to calculate my water footprint:
-
Amy Minato 7/06/2026 8:42 PMgood idea about the shower bucket! it could be more sustainable to take a small bath and reuse the water than a shower where the water goes down the drain

Liana Lounsbury 6/28/2026 4:04 PMI have a reusable cup that I own. Actually a few. I do not use it very much at home though because I leave it in my car or downstairs. As a goal to stop using plastic water bottles as frequently I have decided to start carrying it around with me in the house. I will also start refilling my water cup from cup fill stations more often when I am out or from my fridge when I am at home. Here is a picture of my mug! (:
The cup is also a bright color which should hopefully help me to be able to locate it easier.
-
Amy Minato 6/29/2026 10:40 AMgood plan! there is also new research showing that plastic bottles leach microplastics into our systems..

Liana Lounsbury 6/28/2026 2:16 PMSo for my second eco-challenge I decided to try and unplug appliances or lights when I am not using them. This is something that I actually used to do pretty regularly and I got out of the habit of for whatever reason. I am a visual person. I decided that the best way for me to remember to follow through on this action successfully would be to post sticky notes in at least two rooms where I struggle the most with this. One being the kitchen and the other one in my bedroom. Here is the sticky note I left myself from one of the rooms.
It has actually already been helpful and I at least remember to go back and unplug my appliances even if I don't remember to unplug them initially. Having a visual reminder seems to be very helpful for prompting me to remember to do something. This may be useful to consider for other situations where I would like to develop better habits and not waste as much.

Bernard Garcia 6/28/2026 6:47 PMVisual references would probably help me out too. Something I have yet to try thanks for the thought. -
Jesse Anderson 6/28/2026 3:34 PMHaving visual reminders around your house is a great idea! We have a little whiteboard that we write stuff on in our kitchen with the hopes of having everyone on the same page (sadly it isn't effective as we want it to be). I think I should start putting sticky notes around the house with the hopes that both my myself as well as my rommates can do a better job of being more efficient with our energy consumption.
