Madie's actions
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 45 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 1 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Community

I will spend 60 minutes learning about the experiences of trans, femme, and/or nonbinary people.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 5 conversations.
Community
Host A Watch Party
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Community
Research Restorative Justice
I will spend 60 minutes learning about restorative justice and conflict resolution opportunities in my own community or state.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 150 minute(s) each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Madie Malone 4/22/2025 7:12 PMI started going to bed earlier. I would turn the lights off at a certain time and it would help me fall to sleep faster -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Madie Malone 4/22/2025 7:10 PMSwimming is definitely one of them but I also enjoy walks and surfing when I was home for Easter -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Madie Malone 4/19/2025 7:13 AMI think reuse is one that I could be doing more but is also forgotten about. At the end of a school year people just throw away a bunch of dorm stuff and it all goes to waste. People could reuse it or find someone else that would. I’m work on ways to reuse my clothing or find someone who would want to reuse it.-
Jacob Rohrbaugh 340 4/19/2025 8:46 AMHi Madie!
I completely agree. Reusing things is something I intend and have started to get better at as well. I do think it would be smart to make some of the dorm "stuff" reusable in some way. Because you are right to say that a lot of it goes to waste.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Madie Malone 4/19/2025 7:08 AMI tried active listening with a lot of different people some I knew and some I didn’t. But from all of them I felt a lot more engaged in the conversation even if I wasn’t saying anything -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityHow can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?
Madie Malone 4/19/2025 7:04 AMRestorative Justice can allow more forgiveness and closure in our current justice system. It allows more reflection on actions and fosters a healing environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergySwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Madie Malone 4/07/2025 9:36 AMOne issue that I notice is the extra care that goes along with it. This morning I had to clean out mine because it was molding. So part of the habit of using the water bottle is to clean it as well. I think I will make it a weekly habit so that even if the bottle is clean it will be a part of my routine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Madie Malone 4/03/2025 11:04 AMD.C. gets its power from a mix of renewable and non renewable sources. Since it’s not fully renewable sources there’s still damage being done to the environment. If they went fully renewable they would need a lot more land for these power plants
