  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

Most U.S. short journeys are car-based, even if it would be possible to walk or bike. It's convenient but also represents missed opportunities for exercise and fresh air. Things like getting to neighborhood shops on foot, riding on small errands by bike, or sharing rides can get more activity into daily life. Even making a car-free one or two trips per week will help.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

Nature gives us peace, perspective, and a sense of wonder. It slows us down and reminds us we’re part of something bigger. When people spend most of their time indoors, they risk feeling stressed, disconnected, and detached from the natural world. Without that connection, it’s easy to lose appreciation for nature and its impact on our well-being.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

Walking through a neighborhood or a city gives an entirely different experience than being in a car. You see small things, feel the sidewalks, smell the neighborhood restaurants, and hear the singing of birds or street musicians. You can't get any of that from driving. You are more attached to the environment, you can chat with people, look into shop windows, or make random turns onto intriguing streets.

Typically, walking brings a space closer and alive, whereas driving reduces everything to less about locations and paths.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

You can add purpose to physical activity by bringing personal values like quality time spent with friends and nature. Working out with friends, a sports team, a fitness group, or having a buddy who can act as an accountability partner can be social and enjoyable for physical activity. Instead of your regular get-togethers, walk, hike, or bike. To connect with nature, take your workout outdoors by running, biking, walking, or practicing yoga in a park. Water activities like swimming or kayaking can also add variety while putting you outdoors. With the combination of values and exercise, physical activity becomes rewarding and enjoyable.

Ah, yes—strength is nothing without purpose! Even my armies don’t just swing swords aimlessly; every march across Middle-earth is a shared pursuit of domination. Training with others builds loyalty, endurance, and the will to crush your foes. And taking it outside? Absolutely. Nothing like a good trek across Mordor’s volcanic plains to build stamina. Fitness with purpose—now that’s power.
