I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

Water
Take 5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will look for simple ways to reduce water waste, like reporting slow-to-heat faucets or learning how insulation helps in homes and dorms.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 130 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
If allowed, I will install a low-flow showerhead in my dorm or apartment to save water. If not, I’ll advocate for them or look for other water-saving habits.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 9 hours of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?
Simon Emil Moelgaard 11/04/2025 3:44 PMI usually don’t get as much sleep as I should, so I’ve been trying to go to bed earlier and stay off my phone before sleeping. These changes helped me fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more rested. With better sleep, I’ve noticed I have more energy, focus, and a better mood throughout the day.-
Kenzie Zielke 11/04/2025 3:52 PMHi Simon, I am having to respond to another members post and yours was first to pop up! I also do not get nearly enough sleep as I should be, but I have also recently been trying to. I have made it a challenge to be in bed by at least 9 but start actually going to bed by 9:30-10 at the latest. I have already noticed a difference when I wake up 6am. Usually I was going to bed around 11:30-1am and waking up at 6am. I also have been trying to stay off my phone before bed because it is the one thing that keeps me up for hours, so instead I drink a good amount of water or tea, while reading this new book I have gotten. I hope this sleep journey of yours turns out to work and you can continue to wake up feeling better physically and mentally!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes—if any—do you think you’ll continue long-term?
Simon Emil Moelgaard 11/04/2025 3:43 PMWhen I limited my showers to five minutes, I noticed how much time and water I usually waste without realizing it. It made me more aware of my daily habits and how small changes can make a difference. I think I’ll continue taking shorter showers long-term, not always exactly five minutes, but definitely being more conscious about saving water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
Simon Emil Moelgaard 11/04/2025 3:43 PMI’m not completely sure where my campus or community gets its water, but I could easily find out by checking the local water utility’s website or contacting the city’s public works department. -
