Lily's actions
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise or Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Food
Enjoy a Meatless Meal
Producing 1 kg of beef emits as much greenhouse gas as driving 150 miles, meanwhile, 1 kg of veggies or grains leaves a much lighter footprint! This week, I’ll shrink my climate impact by having 1 meatless meals and/or 1 vegan meals each day.

Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottles from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Simplicity
Meditate or Create a Moment of Silence
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 10 minutes each day to reflect on things important to me.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 1 friends and classmates each day about what I learn. I will also share what I learn on the Ecochallenge feed.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Transportation
Drive Less and Combine Trips
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Health
Reduce refined sugar
Cutting back on refined sugar can improve energy, mood, and overall health. I will limit my intake of sugary snacks and drinks by reducing refined sugar in meals or snacks each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHow was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?
Lily Montes De Oca 2/06/2026 12:30 PMMy experience was easy when I was intentionally trying to eat less meat, and I realized I was really only having meat once a day at dinner. I have now made the effort to discover other meatless dinner options that are still fulfilling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?
Lily Montes De Oca 1/24/2026 11:19 AMWhen I exercise daily, I feel a boost in my energy, attentiveness, and motivation. I enjoy long walks the most, because they allow me to slow down and be with myself while not straining my body but still getting good movement in. -
Lily Montes De Oca 1/22/2026 1:55 PMThis morning, before my 8 AM class, I had an accidental run-in with the sunrise. I admittedly did not make intentional time to do so, but I woke up early enough for my class that I couldn't help but enjoy the colors. Even though it was cloudy, I still made the most of it.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now? What was the most challenging part of reducing refined sugar, and how did you overcome it?
Lily Montes De Oca 1/22/2026 1:53 PMBefore this challenge, I was not addicted to sugar. I was already making efforts to reduce refined sugars and choose alternative sweeteners. The most challenging part of this was realizing that refined sugar is in the majority of foods, even in non-sweet foods. I overcame this by starting to choose whole foods over processed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
Lily Montes De Oca 1/22/2026 1:50 PMPLNU gets its water from the water supply of the City of San Diego, which further gets its water from the Colorado River and Northern California. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat makes you feel connected to your campus, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Lily Montes De Oca 1/22/2026 1:48 PMWhat makes me feel most connected to my campus is talking to friends and classmates throughout my day, and making intentional time to truly connect with them rather than a simple "hey" in passing. -
Lily Montes De Oca 1/20/2026 11:10 AMThis morning I enjoyed the Trader Joe's egg white bites with feta, spinach, and kale, alongside a Greek yogurt bowl. A great meatless meal that leaves me full until lunch!
