Tyler's actions
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 6 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 5 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.

Tyler Mortell 12/05/2024 8:16 AMStill going strong... It's getting to the point now where I don't even need to think about the tasks I'm doing, and it just comes naturally. Quite honestly organic food taste really good and is good for you so that's easy, and saving water is so simple. For example, when you brush your teeth you simply just don't need water running when you're not using it. -
Tyler Mortell 12/03/2024 6:59 PMMy Eco challenge is going fantastic as I've saved so much water now, I'm actually making a difference. I've learned now that it's so easy to help our world and it's as simple as not being lazy. The thought is everything and I've learned that it's easier than you think once you build a passion towards what you're doing. I hope to soon get to the point where I don't even need to think about what I'm doing, and it just comes naturally because in reality it's just the right thing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Tyler Mortell 11/14/2024 7:30 AMSome human activities that hurt water systems include farming, dumping waste, and building over natural areas. These things pollute rivers, lakes, and oceans. To help, we can try to use less water, recycle, and pick up trash when you see it.

Alysa Remsburg 11/14/2024 3:11 PMGood start. And other ideas are to purchase less of the stuff that adds pollutants (products with PFAS, microplastics, lead bullets, food treated with Atrazine...). And fossil fuel use also contributes mercury to our waters.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Tyler Mortell 11/14/2024 7:29 AMIn La Crosse, Wisconsin, it mainly gets its water from groundwater and the Mississippi River. The city uses deep wells to pull water from underground.-
Alysa Remsburg 11/14/2024 3:13 PMWe don't use river water in this city, though our wastewater goes to it.

Tyler Mortell 11/12/2024 10:03 AMFor the last 5 days It has actually been a lot easier than expected. I always enjoy taking longer showers and listening to music but in reality, it should only take 5 min if you're trying to benefit the environment. Overall, when trying to be efficient while cleansing myself, I could really take a shower in 4 minutes if I wanted to. I'm going to continue on taking 5-minute showers to benefit the environment.
