Dylan's actions

Simplicity

Core Values

We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Collect Rain Water

I will create a rain garden or bioswale or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Install a Low-Flow Showerhead

I will save up to 15 gal (56 L) of water a day or 450 gal (1,680 L) a month by installing a low-flow showerhead.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Fix Leaky Faucets

I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water a day or 270 (1,020 L) gallons of water a month per faucet.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Eco-friendly Gardening

I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Simplicity

Organize a Course

I will organize Ecochallenge.org's discussion course 'A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World' with my family, friends, co-workers, or classmates.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Water

Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater

I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Join An Outdoor Project

I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community while observing best practices in my region for not spreading COVID-19.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Explore My Area

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Nature

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Meet My Local Farmers

I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those around the world who produce my food in order to make better choices when I shop.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Simplicity

Needs Vs. Wants

I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Help Others

I will offer to help 3 person(s) who are in need each day.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Support A Sharing Economy

I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, neighbors, or classmates.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Transportation

Ride a WMATA or GU Bus

Use public transportation, like a WMATA bus or GUTS bus, instead of driving or ubering.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Try Capital Bikeshare

Use Georgetown's bike sharing program instead of driving or ubering

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Participate in the Sustainability Scavenger Hunt

Check out the Georgetown Office of Sustainability on Instagram @sustainablegu for weekly clues about sustainable features on campus. If you’re one of the first five to comment correctly, you will win a Starbucks reusable water bottle and free coffee voucher, courtesy of Hoya Hospitality.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Switch to Cold Water

I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Turn it off

I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a reusable water bottle or mug

Skip using plastic bottles and use a reusable bottle. (You could win a Georgetown reusable Starbucks cup by participating in the Sustainability Scavenger Hunt @sustainablegu or by being one of the top ten participants on EcoChallenge)

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a reusable to-go box at Leo’s

Sign up for Hoya Hospitality's reusable to-go box program and use the to-go boxes to reduce single-use waste.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use the compost bin at Leo’s

Instead of just tossing out your trash, reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by composting. Hoya Hospitality composts back-of-house food waste in our kitchens, and all disposable to-go containers are compostable. Leo’s has compost, trash, and recycling options for post-consumer food waste.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Recycle your waste using your trash and recycling room or area

Instead of throwing everything into the trash, reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by recycling. Georgetown uses a single stream recycling system, so all common recyclable materials (with the exception of corrugated cardboard) should be placed in the same bin.

COMPLETED 29
DAILY ACTIONS

Energy

Power Down the Computer

I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.

COMPLETED 29

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Explore My Area
How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Dylan Mubangizi 10/09/2023 5:17 PM
Nature exposure is known to reduce stress levels.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Join An Outdoor Project
How well do you know the area you stay in -- whether your hometown or your campus community? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?

    Dylan Mubangizi's avatar
    Dylan Mubangizi 10/09/2023 5:17 PM
I think i know my area really well. Knowing where you live is important because you never know what treasures you could find if you just became more curious.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators?

    Dylan Mubangizi's avatar
    Dylan Mubangizi 10/09/2023 5:16 PM
Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, and birds, play a vital role in the pollination of many of the crops that make up a significant portion of our diets. They help fertilize flowering plants, enabling them to produce fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Without pollinators, our food supply would be severely impacted.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Dylan Mubangizi's avatar
    Dylan Mubangizi 10/09/2023 5:15 PM
When you know where your food comes from it lets you know the ins and outs of the industry itself, it also helps you control what was used to grow the food itself.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
How do you think climate change will affect your region’s water supply? Think about the effects of weather, storms, salinity, and sea level rise, among other changes. How can you find out more about climate change’s impact to your region's water?

    Dylan Mubangizi's avatar
    Dylan Mubangizi 10/09/2023 5:15 PM
As we live in a city, we light not get hit was crazy as some other communities will. In many regions, climate change can lead to more frequent and severe droughts.
