Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 90 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Waste
RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITES
I will spend 30 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Transportation
Car Share
I will sign up for a car-sharing service or organize car sharing with my neighbors or classmates to cut down on the number of vehicles on the road.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 5 conversations.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

Ryan Mulrooney 4/22/2025 12:01 PMI completed anothr "car-share" activity on my way back to campus from DCA last night. I split a cab with 4 other Georgetown Students.-
Annie Zhai 4/22/2025 1:27 PMI also did something similar, coming back from Union Station the night before. I stayed a little longer so I could carpool with my friends. This way, we can save some gas usage and be more sustainable.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/21/2025 3:24 PMI notice that taking shorter showers has become rutine for me. at first it was hard, but i have forced myself to take cold showers, so I dont linger in the shower. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/20/2025 1:45 PMI use a a couple of backpacks throughout the day, One for school and onw for sports. I will often bring a bag with me when I go somewhere just in case. if i diont have a bag, I will carry whatever it is, or use my pockets if its small enough. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/17/2025 4:02 PMWhile on my way home for easter break, I shared an uber with two if my friends to cut down on carbon output, and split the cost. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/17/2025 4:01 PMOne the track team, there are people who lean more conservative, and others lean more liberal. we will often engage in debates during on our runs, or while eating lunch. Because we are all friends, we can have these conversations in a respectful way. Everyone involved benefits from this because it opens our eyes to new ways of thinking. -
Ryan Mulrooney 4/17/2025 3:52 PMI notice how these actions have been included into my daily life. I Don't have to think about the actions anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/11/2025 5:33 PMafter doing some reflection, I determined my top core values are:
Integrity, accountability, and courage -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Ryan Mulrooney 4/09/2025 1:37 PMThe landfills and other waste sites in Washington DC are located in east DC. This does not surprise me as the east side of DC is less affluent than the west end. Landfills affect these communities by polluting the air and water, lowering home values, and influencing climate change from methane production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
