  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I feel as though I find myself in a position using disposable bags frequently when I am grocery shopping because I forget to bring reusable bags, but I have been a lot more mindful about taking a minute or two to go to my apartment to grab a couple reusable bags before going to Walmart, since I only live a couple blocks away to grab a couple large reusable bags to help better the environment.

I also have a hard time remembering to grab some reusable bags on the way out of the house. Its not that I don't have any reusable bags but its that they are never there when I find I need them.😂When I stop at Walmart for just a couple of things I just carry them out instead of throwing them into a bag. I would rather have the small inconvenience. I also do this at the gas station when grabbing some snacks and a drink. I often think if I can't carry it, I can't have it. This mindset is also great at keeping me from overconsuming.

    Simplicity
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I try to donate any extra stuff to goodwill or another thrift store to give back to the community, but it is hard to declutter my space because I would say I lean more towards the maximalist side of things. I have been trying to become better by using organizational tools, which has helped, but I need to be better about buying things I don't need.

    Community
What inspires you to act toward a more sustainable community?

I volunteered at Ronald McDonald house through AWOL, and we also volunteered at Camp High Hopes for disabled kids. It was a great time to explore the behind-the-scenes actions that are taken to help improve other people's lives who are going through a little extra. It was also great to be able to connect with different parts of the community you usually don't see.

    Transportation
Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

Yes, I have been carpooling with my friend to classes in the mornings, and we stay on campus pretty much all day then I take her home, so usually, it is more than two days per week.
