Mary Adair's actions
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .42 lbs (.19 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 15 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

Mary Adair Panarella 4/22/2025 11:33 AMI really enjoy my daily task to avoid plastic by using reusable water bottles. I find it fun to put my water bottle in the water fountain and watch the "bottles saved" go up one each time.-
Annie Zhai 4/22/2025 1:28 PMI also did the daily task of avoiding plastic bottles. I feel really great every single time the "bottles saved" number goes up because I feel like I'm making a tangible impact.

Mary Adair Panarella 4/22/2025 11:31 AMI found the one-time actions challenging and equally rewarding to complete. I especially liked the one I chose about discovering a new trail to explore - I was surprised by how much seeing a new place can help me appreciate its beauty.-
Erin Saunders 4/22/2025 5:30 PMI chose the same action, and I want to echo your thoughts. It felt nice to intentionally take time to explore a new part of nature. I was very refreshed after!

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Mary Adair Panarella 4/21/2025 9:31 PMI think this enhanced my brainpower in so many ways. It helped me connect with nature and calm down. I also explored this new trail while on a walk with my dog and it was super fun and joyful just watching her explore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunityWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Mary Adair Panarella 4/21/2025 7:45 AMI enjoyed helping my cousin registering now that he is 18. It is really important to vote because it achieves the same wishes we make in class discussions: make the smaller voices heard. I think we should participate in and have as much passion for local elections to ensure changes are being made on every level. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Mary Adair Panarella 4/21/2025 7:41 AMThe process included really figuring out the Amtrak system and going to Union Station. It was a little confusing at first but now that I understand, I am excited to continue using this travel method. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Mary Adair Panarella 4/09/2025 11:08 AMI think just that, save it. Given how little we know about our future and what it will look like, I want to be prepared for anything. -
Mary Adair Panarella 4/08/2025 11:00 AMGood! I am really starting to get extra sleep because of my daily challenge which honestly helps with the rest of the challenges. -
Mary Adair Panarella 4/07/2025 7:03 AMI have really been enjoying my campus ecochallange. It took me a few days to understand the system but now it is a habit to constantly check in and really attempt to complete my tasks. I just completed my first one-time action!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Mary Adair Panarella 4/07/2025 7:02 AMI think having confidence in your personal health is really important for a healthy life/mindset. This freedom can better your community experience and allow you to focus on efforts like environmental health.
