Christopher's actions
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 3.3lbs (1.6kg) a month by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 90 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 90 minute(s) each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:23 AMIt from power plants that use gas and oil. This could be better cause some of the energy is hydro-electric but we could implement more solar pannels -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:21 AMI used to use a lot of straws and now I never use them if i remember to ask them not to give me one -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:08 AMIt is more sustainable to eat foods that take less land to cultivate. Meat products often have a larger carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:06 AMI like to be outside and active so I play games with friends or go on bike rides with family members so we are being healthy with a social aspect -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:03 AMI would like to fall asleep soon and get up on time for classes. I need to fall asleep with white noise instead of with my phone -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 8:00 AMI usually carry things out with my hands. I could leave reusable bags in my trunk so I don't forget them -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 7:59 AMI usually use plastic bags and plastic straws, but if I choose to substitute I can use paper materials or not at all -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Christopher Pappas (102) 4/16/2024 6:40 AMOne barrier is convivence. A lot of times it's the habit of always having water on you and when I don't bottled waters are offered as a substitute. It's difficult to say I'll never use a disposable plastic water bottle again but I can try to reduce or cut it out by always carrying my own reusable bottle.
