  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

    Annie Park's avatar
    Annie Park 4/29/2026 10:35 PM
Turning off the lights when the room is bright enough and when we're leaving the room.
Air-drying our hair, and our laundry.
Use LED lightbulbs instead of other kinds
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity
Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of “reduce” be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

    Annie Park's avatar
    Annie Park 4/23/2026 6:00 PM
I think people with economic privilege have more choice in consumption, so people should choose more sustainable options.

The more people buy and use sustainable options, the more the
companies and industries will focus on making their products eco-friendly and sustainable. They may also make their footprint more transparent to the consumers. (avoid green-washing though).

For the second question, perhaps reusing items allows people who do not have a lot of economic privilege to reduce the amount of items that they purchase.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste
What one thing could you do right away to reduce your waste?

    Annie Park's avatar
    Annie Park 4/23/2026 5:49 PM
Stop buying packaged items -> Buy bulk in reusable bags.
I don't buy things much in general, but if I'm getting a drink (like tea, hot chocolate, etc), I'll bring a mug or a reusable cup. (instead if getting them in a paper cup).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

    Annie Park's avatar
    Annie Park 4/22/2026 7:13 PM
The skins and the stalks can be kept and made for making broths! Sometimes, they can be used for dyes as well.
    For example, onions:
Skin: keep for broths or dying clothes.
    Inside: eat!

    Avocadoes:
    pits: dye (makes pink colour)
    Inside: eat
Skin: I heard about eating the skin, or making skin care with it? Any suggestions?

      Avocado
Flesh: Use for toast, salads, bowls, or guacamole.
Overripe flesh: Blend into smoothies, dressings, or brownies to avoid tossing it.
Skin: Scoop clean and use as a natural bowl for serving (instead of throwing it away).
Pit: Rinse and dry, then regrow an avocado plant or compost it.
Avocado flesh: Mash ripe flesh into a hydrating face mask (10–15 minutes), or mix with a little honey.
Overripe avocado: Blend into hand or foot masks instead of tossing it.
Peel: Rub the inside of the skin on dry hands, elbows, or heels for quick moisture.

Very nice tip with the avocado pits!

    • Love this! I'll have to do my research on the avocado portion.......but it's very intriguing!

Schools that offer a take-out style containers for lunch should make sure that the containers are compostable.

@Marshall. A&W has actually gone full compostable.

One of UNO's cafeterias is doing a take-back container program!

    • I don't know many fast food places that are even making an effort with this. The most I've seen is McDonald's/Tim Hortons with paper straws instead of plastic ones, which doesn't do much.

I thought JAC was starting to do that. Am I mistaken? I know I compost the salad bowl when I buy my salads there.
