  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Choose LED Bulbs
Switching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?

Walking is a great way to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. Car exhaust is a major contributor to CO2 emissions, and tire wear releases PFAS into the air.

Minor lifestyle tweaks can lead to significant change. My EcoChallenge is going well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/18/2024 11:26 AM
In general, higher incomes correlate with higher meat consumption, a trend observed across most high-income countries today. Personally, I believe that meat often tastes better than other foods and is generally more expensive, which may explain why wealthier nations tend to consume more of it. However, increased meat consumption contributes to deforestation, excess methane emissions, and environmental pollution. Additionally, raising animals in crowded conditions poses biological risks, as these environments can foster the development of superbugs due to unsanitary conditions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Work-Life Balance
How might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/18/2024 9:54 AM
Practicing work-life balance allows you to recharge, making you more effective at your job. This balance also helps reduce burnout, leading to better decision-making that aligns with long-term environmental goals. On a broader scale, it promotes sustainable practices by encouraging others to prioritize well-being and reducing overconsumption.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Power Down the Computer
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/18/2024 9:52 AM
You can save energy by reducing unnecessary heating and cooling, using natural light during the day and washing clothes in cold water. Small changes like sealing drafts and opting for public transportation also contribute to lowering your environmental impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Food Lifestyle
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/18/2024 9:50 AM
I fully agree with this assertion. Providing your body with the fuel it needs to function at its best enables natural healing processes to occur. The body is a sophisticated biological system, designed to repair itself when supplied with the necessary nutrients.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/16/2024 11:46 AM
I walk most places throughout my week since I live in a city that is "walking friendly". I walk to work, the gym, stores, etc.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Switch to Cold Water
What do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/16/2024 7:44 AM
I would like to invest it to save even more money for the future. I want to set my future self up for success.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Heat and Cool Naturally
What are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?

    Alex Pavelka's avatar
    Alex Pavelka 10/16/2024 6:52 AM
Our building has solar panels and "solar" is one of the most clean energy sources.

It is going well! The best part is I can improve my lifestyle while helping reduce my waste and consumption.
