Ivy's actions
Simplicity
Reflect on My Needs Versus Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media Use and Reflect About My Experience
I will limit my social media use to once per day and share the impact I see and reflections I have on the feed.
Health
Prioritize Getting Enough Sleep
Good sleep is essential for a healthy body and mind. I will prioritize getting 10 hours of quality sleep each night and develop a bedtime routine that supports rest and relaxation.
Health
Express Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness
Small acts of kindness and gratitude can brighten someone's day and create a positive ripple effect. I will express gratitude to people or perform random acts of kindness to spread joy and connection.
Simplicity
Buy Used Clothes Instead of New
I will spend 20 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will choose thrift stores, clothing swaps, or second-hand options when I shop for clothes.
Nature
Learn How to Save the Pollinators
I will spend 60 minutes learning which plants support local native pollinators and grow some in containers, a campus garden, or at home if space allows.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 60 minutes per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Food
Visit A Local Farm
I will visit a nearby farm to pick my own fruits and veggies.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentaries about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Water
Take 5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Health
Exercise Daily
Daily movement supports our physical and mental health. I will spend 30 minutes each day exercising in a way that feels good to me, such as walking, running, stretching, or dancing.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 per day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Ivy Powell 2/26/2026 12:18 PMAs someone who lives with someone else, it's kind of hard to save power. However, when I'm driving in my car, I make sure the windows are down if I ever get hot. Using the power of the sun, I'm able to save energy in my car by not turning on any heating systems. Another way I could use the power of the sun is to not use the heater. By allowing the sun to reflect through the glass window, it produces heat and I'm able to stay warm that way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes—if any—do you think you’ll continue long-term?
Ivy Powell 2/25/2026 10:20 AMI feel more energized after my shower. Maybe it's the fact I feel better about my water usage but I found myself sleeping a lot better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Ivy Powell 2/23/2026 2:12 PMI believe that Carson's quote is true. Spending more time in nature often reminds people of the natural beauty that people are not beginning to appreciate. For a culture that spends most of it's time indoors, they're unable to get fresh air and breathe in the real world. Indoors also means looking at a lot of things that artificial, losing that connection to the beauty of the natural world. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Ivy Powell 2/23/2026 2:09 PMTurning off the lights in rooms I'm not in, unplug and turn off powerstrips when I'm finished using them, not using heaters and instead just wearing warmer clothes, and not using my phone so much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?
Ivy Powell 2/23/2026 2:06 PMI would like to shift my sleeping patterns depending on my schedule. I am about to get a job and I'll be sleeping for different hours. As of now, I'm enjoying sleeping more before I finally have a part time job. Sleeping in more actually makes me more grumpier! The less I sleep in, the more I'm nice to people. It's weird. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicitySocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Ivy Powell 2/21/2026 12:35 PMI usually just use social media for my communication with friends and family. However, when I'm not doom scrolling for an hour, I just feel better overall. I'm not to tired and I also feel like I have more time within my day to accomplish important things. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityDo people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of “reduce” be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?
Ivy Powell 2/18/2026 11:46 AMI believe that people that have a more economic privilege should have a responsibility to consume and own less. They have more advantages in life than a lot of other people do, allowing them to save things in other for other people to use them. To reduce, people can shop from thrift stores or places that sell clothing items that don't get sold in the regular stores. Reducing also means going out into the community and getting food from volunteer groups and food drives. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow did expressing gratitude or performing acts of kindness impact you and the recipient? Did anything surprise you about your experience?
Ivy Powell 2/18/2026 11:43 AMMy mom recently lost my step-father back in 2022 and currently, her father got into a very bad accident. After I got finished with a job interview, I bought her some flowers and chocolate because I didn't want her to be alone. She really appreciated this and told me I brightened up her day. It made me feel great afterwards and other members of my family are telling me that I did a good job, -
Ivy Powell 2/18/2026 9:54 AMI haven't been able to fill this out every day because my grandpa's been in the hospital after getting into a serious accident. I've also been in Ohio to check on him so I haven't exactly had access to my computer for almost a week. However, I'm back to it now! -
Ivy Powell 2/10/2026 12:03 PMI have actually been noticing a trend in myself as I continue to do these challenges: I am eating all of my food. Because I don't want to waste, I literally eat everything off of my plate. Now, I've actually seen my mood improving in more ways than one!
