Justin's actions
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Justin Rielly 4/28/2025 7:23 PMThe ecochallenge has been very helpful in making me start recycling more and focusing on helping the environment. If I order food I avoid any straws or use of plastics. I also have a water bottle that I use now instead of constantly buying plastic water bottles. It has been pretty easy maintaining not using these plastics and has overall been fulfilling knowing that I am making a difference. I have also focused on making sure the lights in my house and other electronics are being turned off after they are used. Every time I see something left on I always go and turn it off. Also, I have been getting used to taking shorter showers. I still use music to help time my showers so I don't go over the time limit. Knowing I am making a difference is really rewarding in itself. -
Justin Rielly 4/16/2025 6:21 PMThe challenge is going well. I listen to music to time my showers, and I use the same water bottle every day instead of using plastic ones. I do not take plastic straws anymore and I got some reusable bags to use at the store and other places. I also research what is recyclable in the La Crosse area now so I could start recycling-
