Zeke's actions
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk each day to clear my mind, get some fresh air, and support my physical and mental health as a student.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Classmates
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 20 friends and classmates each day about what I learn. I will also share what I learn on the Ecochallenge feed.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.
Transportation
Walk Instead of Driving
I will walk 2 miles each day instead of driving.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 4 gallons (15 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Nature
Do a Nature Activity
I will engage in nature-based activities alone, or with my friends or family, for 90 minutes each day. (This can be anything from going on a walk or hike, to noticing the leaves changing color, to reading a book with nature themes.)
Waste
Collect Litter While Plogging or Plalking
Each day, I will go on a plog or plalk for 15 minutes and collect 5 items of litter.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
Organic farming practices are healthier and safer for our planet, animals, and people. I will enjoy 3 meals cooked with organic ingredients per day.
Nature
Learn to Grow Plants My Way
I will spend 10 minutes exploring how I can grow plants in my space—whether it’s a dorm windowsill, apartment patio, or a shared campus garden.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.

Zeke Rose 11/18/2025 2:51 PMThis challenge has been super fun. I have really made an effort to change the way that I am living, and these actions are starting to become more integrated into my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterDo you know where your campus or community gets its water? If not, how could you find out?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat was your experience like plogging, or engaging in another way to collect litter while being outside? Did you find anything unusual?
Zeke Rose 10/28/2025 3:09 PMPlogging and collecting litter in all of my outdoor activities is something I have really tried to work on. It has been overwhelming to see all of the things that are left behind by others. There are so many things that could easily be thrown away that end up on the ground. -
Zeke Rose 10/16/2025 3:06 PMThis week, I have really enjoyed being a part of this challenge. I can actually catch myself being conscious of how the things I do affect the environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureAre you a gardener or house plant lover? Why or why not? What do you need to elevate your plant care skills?
Zeke Rose 10/16/2025 3:01 PMI am currently both of these. I work on the landscaping team on my campus, as well as have multiple house plants. I am still working to learn more about the plants that I own and how to better care for them.-

-

Zeke Rose 10/09/2025 3:12 PMI personally really enjoy eating organic food. It tastes pretty good and it makes me feel like I am doing something for the Earth.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Zeke Rose 10/09/2025 3:08 PMI try really hard to eliminate the single-use items, but instead of plastic bags, using reusable or paper bags is much better.-
Samantha G 10/12/2025 12:12 PMrecycling or reusing is always a better choice. Sometimes I try to re-use or repurpose the single use item!

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
