Emily's actions
Health
Take Control
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 90 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Transportation
Walk Instead
I will walk 2 mile(s) each day instead of driving and avoid sending up to (___) lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 4 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.

Emily Ross 4/22/2025 7:26 PMGood job guys! Everyone did great. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 7:22 PMI regularly use plastic bags and takeout containers, especially when I am busy and on the go. Instead, I could start using my own reusable produce bags and a collapsible container for leftovers or takeout. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 7:19 PMEating more fruits and vegetables and less meat helps me feel more energized and balanced, both physically and mentally. It also reduces demand for resource-intensive meat production, which can lessen greenhouse gas emissions and conserve water. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 5:00 PMPracticing gratiute keeps me centered by allowing me to breath in the chaos surrounding me. It grounds me and allows me to think about the things and people that really matter to me, allowing for me to grow, and in a way, pass that on to those around me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 4:57 PMIn my community, lower-income families are the most affected by environmental degradation and irresponsibility. They often live in areas closer to highways or industrial zones, where air and noise pollution is much worse than the better-off neighborhoods. Because of this, I see a multitude of health issues surfacing there, all while having fewer reasources to advocate for themselves.-
Brooklyn Ramirez 4/22/2025 6:01 PMHi Emily, you're spot on that low-income families face the highest burden from environmental degradation. This sorta reminds me of Ruether's final chapter of her book where she says "the price of exploitation was borne by the exploited" and only when the true environmental cost are impacting the exploiters will something be done about it. We are in this unfortunate reality where marginalized people are impacted worse by the actions made by those at the top. I hope we can soon all realize our responsibility not only to each other, but to the earth, and reserve this damage.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 4:51 PMI plan to put the money I save from making more energy-efficient choices towards things that matter to me, like education, and supporting local businesses that share my own values. I find that even small savings can add up and I would like to reinvest that into experiences that reflect a more sustainable lifestyle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Emily Ross 4/22/2025 4:48 PM
I find that environmental health, along with community health, and personal health are deeply connected as when the environment around me is clean and safe, like having access to fresh air, I feel better physically and mentally. I have seen first hand how community health shapes personal outcomes, and for me taking care of my health means being mindful of how my choices will have an impact. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Emily Ross 4/15/2025 6:48 AMThe households in my small town mainly generate electricity. It impacts the environment, animals, and humans more positively than negatively compared to other areas because our town is very eco-conscious. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicityWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Emily Ross 4/15/2025 6:44 AMAt first, it was hard to implement this challenge as it was almost muscle memory for me to grab my phone or some sort of device. However, I decided to spend my time when I woke up reading instead.
