I will spend 60 minutes researching environmental justice and environmental racism concerns in my region, who is affected by them, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 10:03 AMThe elderly and children are most affected by environmental degration because their immune systems are worse, so they are more likely to become sick and are more vulnerable to poor air quality, pollution, noise and high temperatures. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:59 AMI would like to spend more time reflecting on my actions and how I act and think when my emotions get high. I want to become more centered and relaxed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:57 AMPesticide and fertilizers are impacting the health of water systems. The runoff that comes from farms and crop fields go into rivers and waterways that lead into our homes. To improve the health of water systems I can continue to try to take short showers, use cold water and be more mindful of how long I leave on faucets and hoses. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and/or touch?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:55 AMI observed the smell of freshly cut grass, and flowers. I could hear birds and the wind blowing around me. I saw people with smiles laying out in the grass. I felt the ground below me and the feeling of being at peace. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:49 AMRachel Carson's statement holds true for me because during this challenge I have found peace and happiness in spending more time outside and doing activities. A culture that stays inside is very unhealthy as they aren't able to experience the natural beauty of the world and get the natural serotonin that comes from the sunlight, grass and nature all around. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Learn About & Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:47 AMPeople can express their personality and creativity in other ways by using old clothes they had or hand-me-downs and refinish or cut them in a way that fit their new style and who they are. They can do fun hairstyles and layer their clothing, instead of relying on fast fashion and buying more clothes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:44 AMIt is difficult to understand the impact we have on the environment and other people because we think one small purchase or action won't affect anything on a greater scale. In reality the small decisions we make with purchases and waste add up individually and then add up as a whole society and world, negatively affecting the Earth. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/17/2024 9:43 AMMy top 5 core values are trust, happiness, respect, kindness, and growth. I narrowed it down to these values because I found what I cared most about in my life which was my family, friends and lacrosse, and I looked at what built the foundation of those relationships and what I held most important to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/03/2024 8:21 AMI am more conscious to not go on my phone when I am practicing mindfulness. Usually I go on my phone a couple times when eating, to text or go on social media which isn't healthy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Audrey Simoes (104) 4/03/2024 8:09 AMI use my reusable water bottle whenever I go to practice or class and fill it up using the water fountains around campus so that I don't use plastic water bottles.
