For my eco challenge , I tried not buying anything online for the week. I noticed I usually want to shop when I am bored or when I see clothes that look good online. Instead of buying something new, I looked through clothes I already had and made an outfit with those. It made me realize I already own enough, but I still get the feeling that I need more. The hard part was not looking online and getting tempted. The good part was saving money and not creating more waste from shipping and packaging and room I didn't have. This connected to consumerism because it showed me how easy it is to buy things I do not really need.

My eco change project is teaching the class how to dye clothing to make old clothes more interesting again. I hope you find some inspiration from it. :)

For this weeks Nature Eco Challenge, I spent time outside and payed more attention to nature around me. I went on a walk and lots of walking with my dogs instead of just staying inside and being on my phone. While I was walking, I noticed the trees, plants, birds, and just how much calmer it felt being outside for a little bit. It made me feel relaxed. I also picked up a few small pieces of trash that I saw because I felt like if I am going to enjoy the space, I should also help take care of it.

The challenge was making time for it because I have school and work, so it is easy to push it off. The reward was that it helped me feel less stressed /more healthy and more connected to the area I live in. This connects to the course because sustainability is not only about big changes, but also about caring more about the environment in everyday life.

I really like how you connected your experience to both personal well-being and sustainability. Taking time to slow down and notice nature—especially something as simple as walking your dogs—can make a big difference in how we feel day to day. It’s great that you were able to recognize how much calmer and more relaxed you felt just by being outside.

I also appreciate that you went a step further by picking up trash. That shows a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment, not just enjoying it. Small actions like that really do add up, especially when more people start doing the same thing.

Your point about time being a challenge is very relatable. It’s easy to prioritize school and work and forget to take breaks, but your experience shows that even a short time outside can have a positive impact. I agree with your connection to the course—sustainability isn’t just about big policies or changes, but also the everyday habits and mindset we build. Overall, this is a great example of how simple actions can benefit both ourselves and the environment.

I finished a transportation challenge for Eco Challenge by attempting to walk more when locations were nearby rather than driving. I like to stroll to places that are close by and feasible to get on foot. I chose this because transportation has a big influence on sustainability, particularly air pollution and vehicle carbon emissions.

Convenience was the largest obstacle. Driving seems easier and is faster, especially when I'm exhausted or busy. especially with the weather this week not being the best. Walking also requires more preparation since I have to consider the weather, my time constraints, and my ability to carry my necessities.

As a result, I moved more during the day where there was light and not as cold but a bit rainy, and felt better about walking around to places that were close by. I chose this because transportation has a big influence on sustainability, particularly with regard to air pollution and vehicle carbon emissions.

regular walking does require some up front planning and material gathering. but it does get easier once you have the gear and its built into your schedule. I had a student who walked 2 hours every day to work and back! she composed music on her walks

I took my dog to the park for my community environmental challenge and ended up in a conversations with people there. As I was walking my dog, people began to approach me and inquire about him. From there, it developed into a more longer conversation. We discussed dogs, the park, and other unrelated topics related to being outside and the area. This, in my opinion, truly relates to community since it demonstrated to me how easy it is to engage with others around you. It doesn't necessarily need to be a major occasion.
One difficulty is that I don't typically go up to people , so it might first seem a little uncomfortable. However, owning a dog made things simpler since peopleAs I was walking my dog, people began to approach me and inquire about him. From there, it developed into brief exchanges. it can feel awkward to chat with strangers. I think dogs (and babies!) help us break the ice

Hey Jaslee, nice going! I can definitely relate to your feelings about approaching strangers and I'm glad it went well. The dog park has always been a great way to meet new friends for myself and my pup. Having a dog in that environment gives you a much easier way to connect with others and sometimes the conversations can turn into relationships which can be fun!

For this week’s water eco challenge I tried to cut down how much water I use in my daily routine. The main thing I focused on was my showers because I know I usually stay in way longer than I need to. I started timing them and tried to keep them around 10 minutes. I also made more of an effort to turn the water off while brushing my teeth, which I didn’t really think about before.
One problem I had was just remembering to actually do it every time. Especially since I was sick this week, it was easy to not care and just take a long shower. At first the shorter showers also felt kinda rushed, but after a few days it didn’t feel as bad.
Something I noticed is how easy it is to waste water without thinking about it. In class we’ve talked about freshwater being limited, but doing this made it feel more real. Even small things like turning off the tap or cutting a few minutes off a shower probably add up more than I thought.
Overall this was a pretty simple change but it made me more aware of my habits. I think it’s something I can actually keep doing. I also looked at a couple other people’s posts and saw someone mention reusing water for plants, which I thought was interesting and might try too.

Being consistent is one of the harder things to do for these challenges. It is interesting to see just how much water is being used, for example my shower head is about 2 gallons a minute which means after 10 minutes I am already at 20 gallons. My shower is also a lower flow one so some people can use a lot more than that.

This week I tried to eat more organic foods. I went to the Portland State farmers market and bought milk, eggs, and vegetables. It felt better knowing where my food was coming from and that it was locally produced. I also cooked more of my meals at home, which helped me look for what ingredients I was actually using. it made me more aware of my food choices and how they connect to health and sustainability.
