HANNAH WADE 3/03/2026 10:18 AMThis week I went to Mt. Tabor and intentionally slowed down. Instead of just walking through, I paid attention to the little things like tiny plants popping up through cracks, moss on trees, small signs of spring. I stayed off my phone and just noticed what was happening at ground level. The challenge was actually slowing down. I usually move fast and distract myself. But it felt grounding to see how resilient nature is, especially the small plants growing in tough spaces. It reminded me that sustainability starts with awareness and relationship to place.-
Kameko Lashlee Gaul 3/08/2026 6:16 PMhannah!! this last sentence blew my mind. makes me want to write it down and hang it somewhere big. sustainability doesn't happen in a vacuum but of course it's hard to see that when we're moving so quickly through the world. thank you. -

HANNAH WADE 2/26/2026 11:31 PMThis week I focused on reducing transportation impact by combining trips and choosing walking over short car trips whenever possible. Instead of driving to multiple places separately, I planned errands into one route and walked to nearby stops I would normally drive to out of habit. The biggest challenge was convenience and time, it’s easy to default to the car without thinking, but slowing down actually made me more aware of distance and how car-oriented routines become automatic. The reward was using less fuel and feeling more connected to my surroundings instead of just moving through them. This connects to the transportation session’s idea that systems shape our habits, and that small shifts in behavior can start to push back against car dependence. It made me realize how many trips are shorter and more flexible than I assume.-

HANNAH WADE 2/26/2026 11:24 PMa couple days late but for the consumption theme I focused on repairing instead of replacing by fixing my pair of black Levi’s that I normally would have thrown out and taking a quick look at what I own versus what I actually use. The hardest part was slowing down enough to repair when it’s so much easier to just buy something new, which made me realize how normalized replacement and convenience are. The reward was honestly how satisfying it felt to keep something in use longer and reduce waste in a small, tangible way.-

HANNAH WADE 2/09/2026 3:23 PMThis week I focused on community by supporting local resources in NE Portland, which felt especially meaningful since I just got out of living in my car this past week. I shopped at a nearby neighborhood grocery and picked up Oregon-grown produce instead of defaulting to big chain stores. I also walked for a few errands instead of driving, which helped me get to know the area better and feel more connected to my neighborhood. The biggest challenge was just having the energy to plan and do these small actions after such a rough few weeks. The reward was feeling grounded and a little more at home in my community, and realizing that even small choices, like buying local or walking instead of driving, make a difference. It also reminded me that sustainability isn’t just about the environment, it’s about people and relationships too.Overall, it was a realistic change that felt meaningful, and I’m looking forward to building more community-focused habits as I settle into my new space.-

HANNAH WADE 1/29/2026 10:31 AMThis week, I focused on saving water while living in my car. It’s a challenge when your space and resources are limited, but I tried to be mindful by using small amounts for washing up, turning taps off whenever possible, and not doing as many loads of laundry (jeans dont need washed after every wear)... At first, remembering to change these habits was tricky, but it quickly became part of my routine. Even small actions make a difference, and it feels good to know I’m reducing my footprint and being thoughtful about water use, even in unconventional living situations.-
Kameko Lashlee Gaul 2/08/2026 3:43 PMi think it's so admirable that you're still focusing on conservation (and going to school in general) while living in your car. when living out of my truck, i relied pretty heavily on showering at gas stations like Love's or at campsites, which seems like a smart ecological option because the water runs on a timer, but also posits other concerns, like safety. also, you're totally right, jeans don't need to be washed after every wear... i forget this sometimes! -

Jessica Edmiston 2/01/2026 2:14 PMI hear ya! I’ve lived van life off and on for about 20 years now, and water management has always been a factor of frustration. I did end up getting one of those military 20L canisters and then adapting a usb powered water pump to fit it so that I could have a slightly more convenient access set-up, which worked great, especially as, at the time, I was spending a lot of time at the coast - I could take the container to the spring water fill up station in the hills, and charge my battery bank by driving; or I could take the canister into grocery store and use one of those ‘bring your own containers’ for refill. I also heavily relied on libraries, gyms, etc. to refill water bottles daily.

HANNAH WADE 1/26/2026 2:07 PMThis week, I focused on lowering my carbon footprint by reducing my trips in the car. I’ve been walking more, carpooling when I go out, and really thinking about whether a drive is necessary. It feels great to save gas and get some extra steps in at the same time!
Small changes add up, and this week reminded me how easy it can be to make a difference just by being mindful about how we move around.-

HANNAH WADE 1/21/2026 3:50 PMThis weeks eco-challenge theme was Energy - I have addressed this in my life by shutting off all screens when not in active use, shutting off all lights when I leave the room and by turning the heat down when I'm not using it, especially on days when it is sunny outside. My goal is to lessen my footprint through small actions like these that are not overwhelming but easily attainable.-

HANNAH WADE 1/18/2026 3:42 PMThis week to reduce my waste I decided to limit my overall buying but have bought less online and when i did order online i made sure to chose the option to save on shipping materials. Along with this I have started a recycling initiative with some of my friends to recycle more and we have reduced the amount of garbage we take out by almost half.-
Nura Salah 1/18/2026 9:35 PMHi Hannah!
Reducing your waste by shopping less is a great idea, I'm glad it also gave you the option to use less shipping materials. That's an interesting way to create less waste that I had never thought about. I'll definitely be trying it in the future! -
Kameko Lashlee Gaul 1/18/2026 9:26 PMhi Hannah, this rocks! i'd be curious to hear more about your recycling initiative and how you brought that up with your friends, i'm really interested in doing the same thing -
Sebastian Medina 1/18/2026 7:17 PMHi Hannah! I also took to some forward thinking about what kind of recycling or garbage-sorting I was doing during the weekend. It was surprising to see how much waste the things I buy can amount to in so little time. It's worthwhile to see this now and be able to make changes for the better, I'm interested to see how little trash I can generate in a week by the end of the term.

HANNAH WADE 1/14/2026 4:06 PMthe ecochallenges are really helping me notice small ways that i can make real, tangible changes through small daily actions. The one that has stuck the most is starting to walk every day, during these walks I have been trying to notice things around me like how much litter and what types are in the streets, and wondering why and what can be done. This week I have notices more than anything either fast food cups and wrappers or packaging from the dispensaries. I wonder what can be done within both industries since they can often go hand in hand.-
Amy Minato 1/19/2026 4:34 PMinteresting idea to check local waste for trends...another student did that once on campus and found a lot of cigarette butts, which prompted him to set out trash containers just for that
