REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:27 PMI currently get around 6-7 hours of sleep, but I’d like to aim for 8 hours to feel more rested and focused. To shift my sleep patterns, I’ve started setting a consistent bedtime and limiting screen time before bed. What works well for me is creating a relaxing nighttime routine, like reading or meditating, to wind down. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste RESEARCH LOCAL WASTE SITESIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:25 PMOn Oahu, the main landfill is the Waimānalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill, located on the west side of the island near Ko Olina. This area and nearby communities, like Nānākuli and Wai‘anae, are most affected by the landfill. These impacts include environmental concerns like odors, pests, and potential groundwater contamination, as well as the social burden of hosting the island’s primary waste disposal site. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Tour A Waste Management FacilityField trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:23 PMWe toured the Marine Debris Research Center and learned about their efforts to recycle fishing nets found in the ocean. They showed us how these nets are collected, cleaned, and repurposed into new materials, reducing waste and protecting marine life. It was eye-opening to see how much effort goes into addressing ocean pollution and how recycling can make a big difference. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Volunteer in my CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:22 PMOne thing I can do to help my community become more sustainable is to promote and practice proper waste separation. By recycling and composting correctly, we can reduce landfill waste, conserve resources, and lower pollution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:21 PMSpending more time outdoors can enhance brainpower by improving focus, reducing stress, and boosting creativity. Fresh air and natural surroundings can increase mental clarity, while physical activity outdoors helps improve blood flow to the brain, supporting better cognitive function. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:21 PMHere on Oahu, the main water source is groundwater stored in aquifers, which are naturally replenished by rainfall. This water is then treated and supplied by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply to meet the island’s needs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:19 PMYes, it feels true. Nature’s beauty and mysteries help us feel calm and connected. A culture that stays indoors too much may lose this connection, leading to stress, less creativity, and weaker emotional growth. It reminds us how important it is to spend time outside. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:18 PMSometimes, it’s inconvenient to carry a reusable cup everywhere, especially when cravings for coffee hit unexpectedly. Forgetting the cup or not having space for it can make the switch challenging. However, knowing that using a reusable cup reduces waste and helps the environment brings a sense of pride and motivation to keep trying. It feels rewarding to contribute to a cleaner planet, even if the habit takes time to fully adopt. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Lara Wolff 12/03/2024 7:17 PMCreativity is essential for practicing simplicity because it helps you find innovative ways to do more with less. It enables you to repurpose resources, solve problems efficiently, and focus on what truly matters, making simplicity both functional and fulfilling. -
