Amanda's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
I will avoid sending 4 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Simplicity
Needs Vs. Wants
I will adopt a "Needs Vs. Wants" approach and only buy things I need.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Work-Life Balance
I will not work more than 8 hour days each day to practice work-life balance.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Transportation
Drive Less
I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:53 AMTaking showers, doing my makeup, and allowing myself to smile are just a few ways I practice self care. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:52 AMA sustainable water future would be only flushing the toilet when it's needed, taking shorter showers, and not running water for long periods of time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:50 AMCreativity can allow a person to use products in ways they are not meant to be used for. This can save the individual from having to buy products they don't need to have. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:48 AMI don't get as much sleep now as I should be getting, which leaves me feeling tired throughout the day. Walking away from the TV and going to bed earlier seems to help me sleep more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:46 AMEating mindfully can cause you to focus more on what your body says rather than the distraction. One benefit is you would eat less because you can concentrate on exactly when you are full. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Drive LessHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:44 AMThe fact that I have complete access to my car can make it tempting for me to want to always use it, but I challenged myself to only go to places I absolutely need to go to. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:42 AMThe one issue with needing to use a reusable mug is the fact that it needs to be washed daily. That takes time and uses a lot of water, but it is worth it in the end because those disadvantages are not as harmful to the environment as single use cups. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:31 AMThis can be incorporated by limiting the amount of plastic used in one day. If I do however need to use a straw, for example, it's important to make sure it is put in the proper disposal bin. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm RoomHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more unnecessary things in the future?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:29 AMI started organizing my room and when I do go out shopping, I ask myself if there is a place to put that new item. If the answer is no, I refrain myself from buying it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Amanda Wurzer 10/19/2023 9:27 AMI struggle with separating my work life and home life. I am constantly working, which leaves me feeling drained. I have learned to take time off for myself to just enjoy my day and do activities that make me happy.
