Jasmine's actions
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 1 new neighbor(s) each day.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Transportation
Ride a WMATA or GU Bus
Use public transportation, like a WMATA bus or GUTS bus, instead of driving or ubering.
Transportation
Try Capital Bikeshare
Use Georgetown's bike sharing program instead of driving or ubering
Energy
Participate in the Sustainability Scavenger Hunt
Check out the Georgetown Office of Sustainability on Instagram @sustainablegu for weekly clues about sustainable features on campus. If you’re one of the first five to comment correctly, you will win a Starbucks reusable water bottle and free coffee voucher, courtesy of Hoya Hospitality.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 133 lbs of CO2 a month and 1,600 lbs of CO2 over the course of the next year.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Waste
Use a reusable water bottle or mug
Skip using plastic bottles and use a reusable bottle. (You could win a Georgetown reusable Starbucks cup by participating in the Sustainability Scavenger Hunt @sustainablegu or by being one of the top ten participants on EcoChallenge)
Waste
Use a reusable to-go box at Leo’s
Sign up for Hoya Hospitality's reusable to-go box program and use the to-go boxes to reduce single-use waste.
Waste
Use the compost bin at Leo’s
Instead of just tossing out your trash, reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by composting. Hoya Hospitality composts back-of-house food waste in our kitchens, and all disposable to-go containers are compostable. Leo’s has compost, trash, and recycling options for post-consumer food waste.
Waste
Recycle your waste using your trash and recycling room or area
Instead of throwing everything into the trash, reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by recycling. Georgetown uses a single stream recycling system, so all common recyclable materials (with the exception of corrugated cardboard) should be placed in the same bin.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Jasmine Yazid 10/13/2023 8:50 PMtoday I spent the day with my parents, and we purposefully bought organic ingredients to make a healthy meal! -
Jasmine Yazid 10/12/2023 3:14 PMI am going to try to move from eating consistent vegetarian meals to having consistent vegan meals. We'll see if the dining hall has good vegan options. -
Jasmine Yazid 10/12/2023 3:12 PMI've gotten very used to always having at least one meatless meal a day. The more I think about it, I kind of already did this before since I like the vegetarian options on campus. -
Jasmine Yazid 10/11/2023 1:39 PMI went out of my way to get a vegetarian meal from Royal Jacket. I got an avocado toast instead of a chicken sandwich, and it was really good. -
Jasmine Yazid 10/11/2023 1:37 PMI've really enjoyed ensuring that I properly dispose of my food after I'm done eating. I even tell my friends to make sure that they know the difference between trash, recycling, and the compost bin. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Meet My NeighborsIn what ways can you create more real and meaningful interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?
Jasmine Yazid 10/09/2023 4:30 PMIf I see someone who I don't know in the elevator, I can introduce myself to them! This has been a great tactic so far. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Jasmine Yazid 10/09/2023 4:28 PMIt does not, because most families do not meal plan. I like the idea of meal planning because I could put the money I save towards my education instead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Jasmine Yazid 10/09/2023 4:27 PMMeat maybe is more expensive, and richer people have access to better quality meat. The way meat is produced is not always great for the planet, but it is good for us to eat. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsMany people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?
Jasmine Yazid 10/09/2023 4:26 PMMy friend cooked a meal for me using organic food, and it was very delicious! Organic food is expensive, but it feels very healthy and clean to eat. -
Jasmine Yazid 10/09/2023 4:23 PMI'm a couple days into using only cold water and its getting way easier, I am now much more used to it.
