Angelo's actions
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gal (56 L) of water a day or 450 gal (1,680 L) a month by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 60-minute walk outside each day.
Nature
Practice Gratitude for Earth
I will spend 60 minute(s) per day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and my natural surroundings.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Water
Brush My Teeth Without Running Water
I will save up to 8 gallons (30 L) of water each day by turning it off while brushing my teeth.
Water
Insulate Water Pipes and Water Heater
I will avoid wasting water while waiting for the shower or sink to heat up.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Prevent Recycling Contamination
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 5 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Enjoy the Sunrise/SunsetFather Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 9:00 PMI think this is very accurate as I did not watch the sunrise in any of my days, but did watch the sunset at least twice a week. This for me felt to be a spiritual experience in which I being religious was able to thank God for what he was giving me in terms of life, and this beautiful earth I live on. I think for me it was also a way to say that I was sorry for not appreciating this gift of waking up and being able to go about my day no matter how hard it was and be granted such a beautiful picture to end the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:56 PMI think that because I started to understand nature around me and see more and take my time to take in nature I do feel as if I feel obligated to preserve and fight for it even more now. This is because I think I took what I had for granted and did not take my time to appreciate what I had around me, not understanding that without my voice this could be taken from me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:52 PMI experienced my neighborhood differently by taking my dog on walks to the nature trail and getting coffee in the morning before work then going and walking along the river. This was different as I found that this makes me appreciate the world around me in a way that I have lived in this city for 22 years and started to see things I have never seen before.-
Ashlynn Martorello 4/15/2024 9:45 PMHi Angelo!
It is unique that walking at a place you're familiar with or somewhere new, it does impact your perspective on the outside world we're in. And even at times when I go to places, I would also feel a sense of appreciation for the world and nature we live in overall. It just makes us grow closer together as humans than ever! :-)

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Prevent Recycling ContaminationWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:43 PMI learned that accepted materials for recycling typically include paper, cardboard, certain types of plastic (usually marked with recycling symbols), glass, and metal (such as aluminum cans). These can often be dropped off at designated recycling centers or included in curbside pickup programs. Items that are commonly not recyclable include certain types of plastics (like plastic bags or Styrofoam), contaminated materials (such as greasy pizza boxes), and hazardous waste (like batteries or electronics). These typically need to be disposed of through other means, such as special collection events or hazardous waste facilities. I think the most difficult part would be being consistent with recycling and not just throwing in the trash. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:39 PMMy energy consumption in 2023 was about 1800 kWh which is under per capita in the San Joaquin Valley which hovers closer to the 2000 kWh per year. To reduce this I can do a better job of turning off lights and even systems that I am not using, not just putting them into rest mode which still consumes energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:33 PMI think that if a study was conducted using facts about microplastics that contaminate the water that we drink a very convincing case can be made to place a ban on them. I also believe that people have been spoiled in the fact that they don't have to carry around and refill their water bottles which is a barrier people place on the reusable water bottles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:30 PMI could use more reusable items such as items that are metal. I recently converted to a metal straw which I wash and reuse. Also, I started to use self-care products that are eco-friendly such as my deodorant which I use native now that uses paper packaging instead of plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:22 PMElectricity in my region is produced by a combined cycle plant fueled by liquid natural gas that spines turbines along with water flow that fills generators. This could affect wildlife, the environment, and the humans around me by increasing pollution through the pipeline that feeds the plant stretching for 20 miles which could pollute the soil where we grow crops and wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:15 PMSome of the activities that impact the health of water systems both locally and globally are pollution that being emissions and trash pollution. This is because pollution impacts the ecosystems in which live and makes freshwater, ocean, and even my watershed thrive. To supplement this another activity would be expanding and changing the landscape meaning impacting the way that water flows and contact with us which affects the quality of water and the wildlife in this habitat.-
Moshe Abramovitz 4/25/2024 8:51 AMI always get on my wife cause she takes way to long of showers. Me I am in and out.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Angelo Zazzarino 4/15/2024 8:08 PMThe main water source in my region is the San Joaquin Delta. This Delta flows to the San Francisco estuary, this water source in my region is the reason the San Joaquin Valley has such a high agricultural presence. This is alarming as the proposition passed for tunneling to Southern California which will deplete this water source for Northern California.-
Moshe Abramovitz 4/25/2024 8:52 AMNever understood why people would keep the water on while brushing.
