  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Collect Rain Water
Trace the water that flows down the drain from your house to the largest body of water nearby. What is the route it takes?

    Jasmin R 11/10/2023 10:30 PM
The largest body of water nearby would be the Fraser River! However, I am not sure if this would be the same water that my drain flows into. I would love to find out more about this!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Fix Leaky Faucets
Fixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency in other ways?

    Jasmin R 11/10/2023 10:23 PM
I definitely feel more motivated to pay attention to other water sources in my household that may be leaky or not as efficient and to be more mindful of the amount of water that I am using (showers, dishes, laundry).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Eco-friendly Gardening
What are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.

I live near areas in the lower mainland that are prone to flooding. Many of my friends had to evacuate during the floods and this was/has been a major water concern in our area. The other day, our drain was full of leaves and the water had rose to a concerning height as the rain was very heavy. This reminds me to be mindful about the area that I live in and to ensure that drains and the other features of my area are kept safe to prevent flooding.

Yesterday I donated some clothes to MCC! I also went thrift shopping and bought some new clothes! I try to donate and thrift clothes as often as I can!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Jasmin R's avatar
    Jasmin R 11/10/2023 12:32 PM
The higher income in richer countries may be an indicator of their higher meat consumption. The production and distribution of meat can be harmful to the planet through the release of greenhouse gases which contributes to global warming and pollution in the environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

    Jasmin R's avatar
    Jasmin R 11/10/2023 12:24 PM
Sometimes when I see or hear the word “creativity” I think of doing more / putting in extra effort. However, simplicity can help form creativity into something that may be easier to approach. For example, if we clear distractions, focus on one thing at a time, and simplify directions we may be able to complete tasks more efficiently!

I convinced my very carnivorous brother that vegan "chicken" strips taste better! He doesn't even want normal ones anymore :D I find them faster to cook, better seasoned, and crispier than real frozen chicken strips

That's a great feat to accomplish, it can be very difficult to sway a person who enjoys meat! What brand of vegan chicken strips do you buy?

Unmeatables and beyond meat brand are really good, although I have found that you get more per dollar with the unmeatables!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I'm about a 5-10 minute drive from places that recycle flexible plastics, glass, metals, styrofoam, bottles, appliances (small & large), paint, electronics and more. We accumulate our recyclables to minimize the amounts of trips made. This close proximity certainly makes it easier to recycle as much as we can without having to go a great distance, very little ever gets put in the garbage bin that my city collects!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

    Jasmin R's avatar
    Jasmin R 11/09/2023 8:54 PM
I often get headaches or feel tired after looking at screens for long periods of time. In implementing this challenge, I felt a lot more refreshed as I encouraged myself to go on a walk or organize instead of staying on my laptop! It was easy to find activities and I overall felt more motivated!

I do too! It can be really hard to avoid screens for me, since I spend the majority of my workday in front of a computer. Then I go home to do my schoolwork and continue working on my computer, so as a practice, I try to take a lot of breaks to get away from my computer! If I can't, I try to follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 ft. away for 20 seconds I find it helps, especially if you are able to look outside!
