My wife and I have implemented a "one in, one out" rule when it comes to purchasing. If we buy something, we must donate or sell something else.

    Water
What did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes—if any—do you think you’ll continue long-term?

I started taking cooler, shorter showers to save both energy and water, and I quite enjoy them. I leave feeling more energized and less lethargic. It is uncomfortable, but I think facing some discomfort to start the day proves that I can do other uncomfortable things throughout the day.

This week at the grocery store, I made a more conscious effort to be aware of what I needed to buy and whether I would use everything I bought. Taking more time to think about my purchases not only eliminated waste, it also saved me some money!

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?

I've adjusted my sleep schedule earlier for more sunlight during the day and better feelings of productivity and, truly, it's been helpful in my mindset of the day and I plan to continue.

I spent some time today being mindful about the snow and our water situation. I normally don't enjoy the snow - but today I felt especially grateful for precipitation. I am looking forward to learning more about water this week.

This weekend, I went "plalking" at Antelope Island, which means to pick up trash while walking. I enjoyed bringing a trash bag along with me as I went, instead of seeing the trash there and ignoring it.

Got out for a run on the trails. It was good to be outside and be surrounded by our local vegetation.

I'm curious, what trail was it? Where is it? I might take friends or family and walk down it.

I love trail running! I will be doing that very soon :)

    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I realized I don't know the size of my yard, for one thing. It's also hard to figure out an average answer for some things like outdoor watering when it varies through the season in response to temperature, etc.

Our water fixtures are certainly newer than the date the footprint calculator mentioned for non-low-flow fixtures, but I expect they could be even more low-flow. Getting more drip irrigation zones set up in the garden will help with outdoor watering too.

Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I have a dog that I like to take for walks. We live right by the Ogden River Parkway, so we always enjoy a walk by the river (and my dog enjoys walks in the river). It is a nice escape to "nature". Seeing ducks swim, fish jump, and birds fly overhead is a nice connection to the world around me.

Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

This is why I love weather so much. No matter where I am, I can look up at the sky and learn something about the state of the atmosphere. I can also draw conclusions based on what I have learned from past science classes about what weather we're experiencing and what is to come. I especially love sunrises and sunsets. Sunrises to me represent opportunity, a fresh start. Sunsets invite me to reflect on the day.

This quote reminds me of my favorite quote my Marcus Aurelius: "When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive-to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love".
