Got out for a run on the trails. It was good to be outside and be surrounded by our local vegetation.

I'm curious, what trail was it? Where is it? I might take friends or family and walk down it.

    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

I realized I don't know the size of my yard, for one thing. It's also hard to figure out an average answer for some things like outdoor watering when it varies through the season in response to temperature, etc.

Our water fixtures are certainly newer than the date the footprint calculator mentioned for non-low-flow fixtures, but I expect they could be even more low-flow. Getting more drip irrigation zones set up in the garden will help with outdoor watering too.

    Simplicity
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I have a dog that I like to take for walks. We live right by the Ogden River Parkway, so we always enjoy a walk by the river (and my dog enjoys walks in the river). It is a nice escape to "nature". Seeing ducks swim, fish jump, and birds fly overhead is a nice connection to the world around me.

    Nature
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

This is why I love weather so much. No matter where I am, I can look up at the sky and learn something about the state of the atmosphere. I can also draw conclusions based on what I have learned from past science classes about what weather we're experiencing and what is to come. I especially love sunrises and sunsets. Sunrises to me represent opportunity, a fresh start. Sunsets invite me to reflect on the day.

This quote reminds me of my favorite quote my Marcus Aurelius: "When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive-to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love".

What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I found it easy to choose something other than screens. However, if I don't choose something else, I find that I default to screens. I decided to do some painting last night, and it brought a lot of joy! It was challenging but rewarding.

I drive to Salt Lake at least once a week with a group of friends for an exercise class. Most of the time we all drive separate due to different schedules, but this week we made an effort to carpool. Rather than 4 of us driving separate, we made the effort to meet at one person's house and drive the rest of the way together.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? A patio container? Hanging basket? Windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

For a long time, I thought I would be unable to garden due to a lack of access to land. After a while, I was able to utilize part of the property in front of my apartment to grow vegetables and herbs. HOWEVER, the most successful herbs I have grown have been in the care of my home. I have many scraps that have turned into usable goods as well as rosemary, that is less herb and more tree at this point. I plan to continue with many more plants to observe differences and research individual benefits.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? How can knowing their food producers enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

Knowing where your food comes from and how it is produced removes ambiguity around food production and promotes local agriculture. I know for me, learning how the specific items I am eating are prepared and cared for gave me a sense of connection to what materials I am using to nourish my body and helps me feel more in control.

How was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?

Good overall, I know that I can gain necessary protein in different ways now and have been seeking out more nutritious food opportunities with lentils, beans, and other plant fibers and proteins.

I eat mostly vegetarian generally, but I'm working on at least one vegan meal a day -- I forgot about the butter!
