  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
How well do you know the area you live in? In what ways is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you?

Being part of the York College STREAM Team has enabled me to become more connected to the natural world around me. We learn about all the species that interact with the Tyler Run Stream and why restoration of the stream and surrounding vegetation is vital for the ecosystem. This is important to me because I believe that in nature, nothing lives alone. That means humans must consider their impact on the environment and work to protect it.

    Water
What did you notice about your habits or routines when limiting your showers to five minutes? What changes—if any—do you think you’ll continue long-term?

I noticed that getting ready before class was easier cause I didn't shower for as long so it allowed me to eat breakfast more. I will probably continue taking a quick shower in the morning as it wakes me up and still leaves me with enough time to get ready with time to spare.

    Nature
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

absolutely, I have always loved being outside because it is so refreshing just to experience life and enjoy things to the most, rather than being inside, I still enjoy experiencing things inside but it is not like being outside at all!

Honestly it was not hard at all, I love being able to get away from social media or my phone and hangout with friends. I decided to go to a high school football game with some of my high school friends to watch some of our younger friends play their last game ever.

I tend to forget check ins with my challenges, but when I remember, it honestly feels great to know how much I'm accomplishing. Even if some of my chosen actions are small, an attempt is made at bettering things, and I think that's the important part.

    Community
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversations benefit from active listening?

Today, I attended the business event held at York where I listened to many different speakers on how to get ahead for future jobs and networking. It was good to hear each person's input to the conversation, and it also helped me gain knowledge on topics I thought was unimportant. I think both people benefited from active listening because of the ideas being bounced back and forth to each other. One side or person might hear one thing and have a different opinion than the other, making the conversation build.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water
What surprised you most about your water footprint, and how did it influence your perspective on water use? What changes can you make to reduce your water consumption, and how will these impact your daily routine?

What surprised me the most about my water footprint was the amount of water I actually consume. It influenced me to realize that it’s one of the most crucial aspects of human existence. To reduce my water consumption, I can calculate how much water I’ll drink daily and avoid exceeding that amount.

Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I use a walk as a break to get away from all the stressors. This is my time to enjoy nature and have some peace.
