  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

Since being in Scotland, walking has become the norm. This is because there are so many safe pedestrian footpaths for use to use.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

In Carlsbad, household can choose if they use solar, wind, or fossil fuels in their home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I would like to get to bed earlier and wake up earlier. I think that limiting screen time late at night helps me fall asleep easier. Waking up early and starting my day refreshed is a goal of mine.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Natalie Landes's avatar
    Natalie Landes 9/14/2023 10:18 AM
I think that buying community sourced agriculture, or CSA, definitely does more good and less harm. I try to buy direct from farmers in my area who use organic farming practices.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

    Natalie Landes's avatar
    Natalie Landes 9/14/2023 10:16 AM
I think this is true. When I spend time outside, my nervous system feels more regulated and my health improves. Cultures that remain inside lack the connection to nature and the animals and plants in their environment.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

Water fill stations need to be more available, and oftentimes single-use plastics are used out of convenience. I think that people just need to remember to carry them more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Use Public Transit
The US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and just 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not? How would you adjust them if you could?

    Natalie Landes's avatar
    Natalie Landes 9/14/2023 10:13 AM
These are surprising numbers because public transit is so convenient and environmentally conscious, I wish gov would invest more into it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

When eating mindfully, I try to eat with friends and connect over conversations.
