Jamie's actions
Simplicity
Core Values
We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Nature
Keep a Nature Journal
I will journal each day about my experiences in nature.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Jamie Sanders 12/01/2023 6:58 PMI have been trying to buy less food that I know I might end up wasting, and this reduces my carbon footprint by reducing my food waste. This also lowers the energy used to process my food waste. I also have been making sure I turn off all my lights when I'm not using them, saving energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Keep a Nature JournalWhat natural gifts are you grateful for?
Jamie Sanders 12/01/2023 6:55 PMI am grateful for the ocean and for the gorgeous beaches. I always feel so centered and grounded when I'm near the ocean. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jamie Sanders 12/01/2023 6:54 PMI regularly use straws, and before the challenge, I'd used compostable straws with the occasional plastic straw. Since the challenge, I've brought my metal and reusable plastic straws to more places. I think this is a simple substitute, just keeping up this habit is the main struggle. -
Jamie Sanders 11/29/2023 10:27 PMSo great to be almost done with our eco-challenge, and with the semester! Great to keep up with some healthy habits for the environment -
Jamie Sanders 11/29/2023 10:26 PMI had a good day with the eco-challenge today. I was able to study on Carmel beach while working on my capstone, and while doing so, I used a metal straw to drink my tea. It was great to be able to breathe some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors so I can feel motivated to keep up with my eco-challenge goals- one of which is to spend time outside :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Jamie Sanders 11/06/2023 10:30 PMIs it more important to have short showers always or a low total of minutes in the shower a day?
