Michael's actions
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 90 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Health
Joyful Movement
I will spend 60 minutes doing an activity where I'm both moving my body and enjoying myself.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 30 minute(s)
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Michael Shirey (104) 4/20/2024 7:47 PMI think this is a true statement. A culture that spends too much time indoors loses a sense of nature and the ability to connect with their environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Michael Shirey (104) 4/20/2024 7:37 PMIn my hometown, our electricity comes from fossil fuels. This is not the best option for the environment. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Limit Social MediaSocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also create echo chambers and take more time than we realize or intend to give. After completing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Michael Shirey (104) 4/18/2024 6:12 AMI noticed I spend more time than I would like on Instagram, so I used a feature on my phone to lock the app after 30 minutes of use. I feel more rested, since I usually spend most of my time on the app before going to sleep.
