REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Grace Spears 12/13/2023 7:21 AMWhere I live I get my energy from Duke Energy. This impacts animals because some can fly into power lines. Duke is one of the top gas leakers and that's very harmful to the environment. Electricity contains a mix of toxic pollutants, which is also harmful to humans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?
Grace Spears 11/21/2023 10:04 AMThe transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems allows people to see that there are more benefits to growing your own food and being resourceful. Food sovereignty gives people more access to local nutritious food. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food ApartheidWhat can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Grace Spears 11/15/2023 11:09 AMThe physical impacts of not eating fresh nutrient-rich food can lead to obesity and higher risks of diseases. If a community lacks fresh foods then it will higher the overall health care cost and death rate. If a community has access to nutritious foods then they are more likely to adapt to stress quicker and easier (aka being resilient). If the majority of a community is under stress then the community can fall apart, but if everyone is able to eat good fresh foods then the stress and anxiety levels will go down. Also medical costs will go down if less people are struggling with disease. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Grace Spears 11/15/2023 10:00 AMSome things that I found that you can do instead of throwing away or improperly recycling items is bring them to someone who can! Things like TV tires can't be thrown out in your home so instead you can bring them to places like Best by and Lowe's to safely and properly recycle them for you! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (school, work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Grace Spears 11/13/2023 7:38 AMEvery week day I drive to school with my sister. We realized that it is so pointless if all of my friends drove separately to the same place so we decided to carpool to and from school every day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Brush My Teeth Without Running WaterWhat is the main water source in your region? If you don't know, how could you find out?
Grace Spears 11/13/2023 7:34 AMThe main water source in my region is surface water from rivers and lakes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Grace Spears 11/13/2023 7:32 AMIf I found myself in a position where I didn't have a reusable bag I would bring my cart out to my car to load it in if it is a lot of stuff and if it's just a couple of things I will just carry them. A way I can prevent this from happening is by keeping reusable bags in my car so that I always have them wherever I go. -
