I watched Seaspiracy with my roommate, Daniel, whom was surprised and inspired by the information about the fishing industry. It is cool to see my friend become more and more passionate about sustainability by showing him unique forms of media like documentaries!

Being of service to your neighbors and friends is not only enriching, but beneficial to all individuals involved in the process! Today I helped my friend John figure out whether or not he can surf due to his medical complications.

One thing that I am extra grateful for is that I live so close to so many natural experiences. This makes it much easier and convenient to spend time doing a different, engaging activity besides being on my phone. I just finished surfing for 2 hours and I feel more energized than my phone could ever!

When I walk around Point Loma, I am able to pick up on the sounds emulating from my community. I can hear the waves crashing, the wind blowing, seagulls chirping, and neighbors chatting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

One thing that I know impacts the health of water systems, from first hand experience, is untreated sewage leaks into the ocean. The Playa del Rey sewage plant spilled over 17 million gallons of untreated sewage into the pacific ocean right off the coast of Los Angeles. Although this issue is more representative of structural/organizational failure, I can take steps like being conscientious of what I am dumping into sewage plants. Maybe once I become a home owner I can begin re-purposing the water used in my house to help relieve the demand on sewage plants.

How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

I think that practicing gratitude can keep oneself centered and motivated to work for a better world because it can help deflect the stress and anxiety that dampens the hope for a better world. For example, by remembering a cool act of sustainability that your friend exhibited, one might feel less alone in their journey!

What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

    Ryan Whitener's avatar

I think some other easy things that I can do to save energy is to unplug all of my chargers and plugs from nearby outlets in my room when I am at class or asleep. I did not realize this wasted energy until recently!

I feel like I spend so much time aimlessly looking at my emails and youtube when I am lacking motivation to do school work. But wow! I did not expect even just spending 15 minutes outside can give me so much more motivation and energy!

This week I have felt much more fulfilled in my ecochallenges! I think one area that I have worked really hard on this week is finding other ways to replace time on my phone through activities like surfing, walking, playing frisbee golf with my bestie, and sitting on a scenic point on campus. I am definitely curious how others find ways to use phone time!
