What did you learn about racial injustice in the documentaries you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?

The Documentary watched was "Alabama Solution," which explores the inequalities faced by individuals in Alabama's federal prisons. A lot of the African Americans are incarcerated longer than they are supposed to be. Also, do not get a say in their parole hearings.

    Waste
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

I feel as though I find myself in a position using disposable bags frequently when I am grocery shopping because I forget to bring reusable bags, but I have been a lot more mindful about taking a minute or two to go to my apartment to grab a couple reusable bags before going to Walmart, since I only live a couple blocks away to grab a couple large reusable bags to help better the environment.

I also have a hard time remembering to grab some reusable bags on the way out of the house. Its not that I don't have any reusable bags but its that they are never there when I find I need them.😂When I stop at Walmart for just a couple of things I just carry them out instead of throwing them into a bag. I would rather have the small inconvenience. I also do this at the gas station when grabbing some snacks and a drink. I often think if I can't carry it, I can't have it. This mindset is also great at keeping me from overconsuming.

Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What changes did you make to improve your sleep, and how did they affect your day?

I have been getting around 6/7 hours of sleep each night, and I want to start getting 8+ hours each night. I will do this by going to sleep earlier and putting my phone away earlier. I started to read before I go to sleep instead of being on my phone, and this has allowed me to fall asleep faster and get a better night's rest.

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

I try to donate any extra stuff to goodwill or another thrift store to give back to the community, but it is hard to declutter my space because I would say I lean more towards the maximalist side of things. I have been trying to become better by using organizational tools, which has helped, but I need to be better about buying things I don't need.

I volunteered at Ronald McDonald house through AWOL, and we also volunteered at Camp High Hopes for disabled kids. It was a great time to explore the behind-the-scenes actions that are taken to help improve other people's lives who are going through a little extra. It was also great to be able to connect with different parts of the community you usually don't see.

Take a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, school, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?

Yes, I have been carpooling with my friend to classes in the mornings, and we stay on campus pretty much all day then I take her home, so usually, it is more than two days per week.

I volunteer at the local elementary school once a week- While I have been there, I have helped some of the students learn what is recyclable and not, as well as explained to some students why a reusable water bottle is better than a plastic bottle. Doing this has taught some of the next generation how to practice sustainable ways.

One of the most effective things I have learned is the beneficial impact a plant based diet has on the world. I like to encourage others to understand that plant-based diets aren't a sacrifice, but help enrich the range of foods we can eat, while improving resource conservation and environmental sustainability. So one thing I can do is create more plant based meals that encourage others to recognize the food tastes good and is low cost.

How was your experience intentionally trying to eat less meat?

It is more difficult than I thought to have no meat in my meals. It is especially hard for me to have a vegan meal. Still amazing food though!

Turning off my lights and my fan when I am not in the room. I could also unplug everything when I am not using them.

How did exercising each day impact your physical or mental well-being? What activity did you enjoy most, and why?

Working out helps me clear my mind and focus on myself rather than what I have to do that day. I love going for long walks because it allows me to reflect on myself and gives me time by myself.
