Some of the needs that water meets for me is thirst, it helps me cook, it helps me wash my clothes and clean my house, and it also helps me shower. Water also helps me stay hydrated and healthy, which helps me stay happy and active.

    Waste
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I believe the main barrier for using reusable bottles and tap water for many people is the accessibility they have to it. I know that when I go to Mexico with my family, we cannot drink tap water, and its very uncommon to see water fountains where you can easily refill your reusable water bottle, so plastic bottles are more commonly used. But that is a more world-scale issue, in a smaller-scale issue, a lot of people don't like the taste of tap water, and my simple solution to that is simply adding some flavoring, either store-bought or homemade such as lemons and berries. Thankfully, I have accessibility in the U.S. to drink tap water and to easily refill my reusable water bottle in many places, so keeping up this habit won't be a struggle, in fact, it is already a set part of my daily routine.

    Transportation
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

This statistic does describe my transportation habits, however, I usually drive more than four miles daily so walking to my destination is very unlikely because I would need endless hours to make it on time which just isn't realistic. I definitely try to walk as much as I can around my community, like when I go to the grocery store, or the gym, or to get coffee.

I believe creativity is a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity because many times, creativity can help us to create things out of other things. Creativity can also help us to have different perspectives and to find different ways of solving an issue. Simplicity can feel vast and fulfilling if we incorporate creativity into it.

What best helped you with your Mindfulness Practice? How does Mindfulness keep you grounded and sustain your work with compassion?

What has helped me the most with my mindfulness practice is my sense of gratefulness. I try to practice mindfulness in many aspects of my life, not just as a meditation, and every time I realize how blessed I am, I feel extremely grateful and get a strong desire to just meditate and praise God for his love. I feel like mindfulness keeps me grounded by being a quiet moment in my busy mind, this doesn't mean my thoughts are completely silenced, simply that I focus my thoughts on God and on thanking him.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

I think Berry's assertion is a beautiful way of describing the spirituality behind staring at a sunset or sunrise. I have always felt as though it is a religious ritual because every time I get to the watch the sunset or sunrise, I can really feel God's presence.

I've never personally felt as though I have been "addicted" to sugar, I always try to balance my foods, however, I am a person tie a sweet tooth and I do often find myself craving something sweet or chocolatey. With this challenge, I have opted to satisfy my sweets cravings with fruit instead of chocolates or cookies. I have also stopped buying sweet snacks from the grocery store. Right now I feel like my will-power has strengthened, and I am able to say no more easily to my cravings.

I have successfully achieved sleeping one more hour every night, however, I would like to change my sleeping patterns by going to bed earlier so that I can wake up earlier. I just feel like I could be more productive if I woke up earlier, but I am unable to do so if I continue going to sleep past midnight every night. I have found that it is helpful to not be so strict with my daily routine and tasks, it's okay to just rest.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food
Many people say that “you can’t feed the world with just organic food.” How would you respond to that statement?

    • TEAM CAPTAIN
I understand that because of the world population, feeding everyone with organic food sounds unrealistic, but I believe it is possible. I think people can opt to shop from local farmers rather than big grocery stores. I also think people have the option of growing their own food at home, which in the long run would end up saving them money. I believe there are many options for people to eat mostly organic foods, the problem is that people prefer doing what is convenient and harmful, rather than what is not so convenient, yet sustainable.

I selected the renewable energy option for my apartment, and when I go back home, we have solar panels, so both of the places where I live in have renewable energy. Renewable energy doesn't create harmful greenhouse emissions, which in turn reduces air pollution and leads to a healthier planet. I am happy that my family and I are partaking in a small action to help the future of our planet.
