Sue's actions
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Cheap, single-use items and disposable packaging end up blowing around as litter more often in poor and POC-majority neighborhoods. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Community
Research Restorative Justice
I will spend 30 minutes learning about restorative justice and conflict resolution opportunities in my own community or state.
Waste
Learn About & Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will learn about sustainable fashion and begin trying to practice it in my own life.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden, or prepare for one, each day using sustainable gardening practices.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Practice Loving-Kindness Meditation
I will spend 5 minutes practicing Loving-Kindness Meditation to nurture love and compassion for myself and others.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Community
Attend a Sustainability Week event
I will join my St. Thomas community in celebrating Sustainability Week and attend at least one event or participate in one self-guided activity in addition to the Ecochallenge during the week of April 21-27! View the full schedule of events at link.stthomas.edu/sustweek24.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 10 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 5 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home or dorm room.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Health
Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Sue Kittams 4/23/2024 7:09 AMPracticing gratitude reminds me that while my circumstance may be flawed or lacking, finding something for which to be grateful in each situation while reflecting on what can be done differently, helps me to stay motivated for improvement.-
Katelin Dias 4/23/2024 12:24 PMI totally agree with this. It is hard to stay motivated and grateful, but practicing it really helps make it easy and be a little less stressed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food ApartheidWhat can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?
Sue Kittams 4/23/2024 7:00 AMLack of access to nutritious food can negatively impact the overall health of a community. Nutritious food supports community resilience by reinforcing better health, less health-related issues, and among children, better learning preparedness. -
Sue Kittams 4/22/2024 6:15 AMI'm finding it is incredibly difficult to recycle worn/unwearable clothing and textiles. My county recycling center doesn't have much info on it other than to check out other organizations, none of which are convenient or even accessible.-
Sue Kittams 4/22/2024 7:34 AMYes, I have looked into Ridwell and they sound like a great organization. Unfortunately they are not in my community yet and I think they require many more participants to sign up before they will come. :( I wish I could find an organization that makes rag rugs - like back in my grandma's day when all the old clothes would be ripped into strips, kept in a basket and then made into beautiful rugs. Maybe a job for me when I retire......... -
Maria Dahmus 4/22/2024 6:56 AMIf you haven't already, check out Ridwell. Ridwell is a great business (they charge a monthly fee) that recycles unwearable clothing and textiles and many other items that most city/county recycling services aren't able to collect (e.g., plastic film, multi-layer plastics). They provide a bin and pick up from your door every other week. https://www.ridwell.com/
