  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Walk Instead
Half of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Does this statistic describe your own transportation habits? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?

Yes, most of the trips that I take with my car are three miles or less. I could use a bike or walk more to reach my destinations if it is nearby.

The challenge is still going well for me. I have been trying to reduce my gas emissions, and walk instead. I have been walking at least 3 miles daily. If I can get there by foot, I will try my best to.

I have really enjoyed saving resources by shopping sustainably and eating whole foods. The things I buy to eat are mostly in biodegradable things and are better for the environment than goods that are stored in plastic at the store.

My campus challenge is going well! One of my challenges is switching to cold water. I have been washing my clothes, taking showers, and cooking with cold water. I knew that using cold water was better for the environment, but after seeing the impact that is has had on reducing CO2, the cold showers are worth it!

I also tried this, a little difficult at first but the it becomes a routine.

My ecochallenge is going very well by only using a reusable water bottle throughout the day that I refill and wash at the end of the day to use it again the next. I have also been brushing my teeth without running water and taking showers as fast as possible.

I carry around a reusable water bottle too and I think it is sustainable and makes me happy that I am saving plastic. Even though I am not participating in that, I am actively trying to save plastic as well.

For my eco-challenge I decided to cut meat out from two meals every day, and it is going pretty well! I was a vegetarian before for a couple of years, so it isn't foreign to me; however, it is harder to cut meat out when living on campus and not being able to cook my own meals (and the Whitney vegetarian options are very mediocre). I do miss my badger subs, but I still am allowing myself meat for one meal a day, which I think has been very helpful with my success in this challenge!

I think this can be a very difficult challenge especially relying on campus food, but great to hear it's going so well!

With the nice weather I have been doing good at getting outside and going for walks. I have not been updating this website as well as I should be, but I have been getting my walks in, and I have been brining friends with me.

I have been trying to reduce my sugar intake, take five minute showers, spend more time outside, and eat more fruits and vegetables. When it comes to reducing my sugar intake i’ve actually noticed how much better and healthier I feel. Normally when i would eat sugar my stomach would feel heavy, and I would feel gross. When it comes to taking five minute showers it has been a little hard, but I have more time on my hands than wasting water for a 15+ shower. When it comes to eating more fruits a vegetables, I again feel healthier, but it has been a little hard because I am picky and Whitney does not always have the best options. Spending more time outside has been really relaxing especially since it is starting to warm up. It only gets hard when the weather is gross. Ultimately by doing these daily actions, I have been noticing a difference for the better.

Throughout this challenge I have found it easier to remember to do certain task like turning off the lights and use a water bottle because they are easier to remember and more simple to do. I have also forgotten many times to log my progress.

Not a big deal to me if you don't log your progress (though it could affect your competition). Make sure you're doing at least one action that's really a challenge for you.

My eco-challenge going well, I am eating whole foods and being more sustainable with the packaging my produce and other whole food are in.
